Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. I love how all over the place this is! Heck you even have Enya, she's underrated. Cool seeing Jon & Vangelis, what a unique pick. Found you through Röyksopp Profound Mysteries 2 album. Also underrated.

Placebo is sick, Meds is too dark for me but a superb album. Battle for the Sun is an album you should check out.
