As the greatest living songwriter enters his 7th decade of productivity, during a time of turmoil, his great wisdom is as welcome as ever. If not for his voice of gravel, Rough and Rowdy Ways could be mistaken as a relic from one of his past eras. [First added to this chart: 06/26/2020]

As the frontman of The Afghan Whigs and The Twilight Singers, Greg Dulli has consistently provided the world with some of the greatest rock records ever made. As he's gotten older, he's been able to maintain his trademark swagger. Billed as Dulli's debut solo album, though he released the fantastic Amber Headlights in 2005, Random Desire is pretty much exactly what fans would expect from Dulli. It's not quite the overwhelming greatness of Gentlemen or Blackberry Belle, but it's also not far off. [First added to this chart: 02/25/2020]

On Straight Songs of Sorrow, Mark Lanegan sounds like a more weathered Nick Cave making a Spiritualized record. The former Screaming Trees frontman has lived quite a life, and he's here to share what he's learned. I've long enjoyed Lanegan's haunting voice, but have never appreciated any of his own records quite as much as I've enjoyed Straight Songs of Sorrow. This album's combination of desert blues and spacey atmosphere is just intoxicating. [First added to this chart: 06/25/2020]

For the past 20 years, Ben Chasny aka Six Organs of Admittance has explored folk music through an experimental lens, resulting in a sound that has often plunged into dark psychedelic drone while maintaining a natural earthy feel. Companion Rises is a richly textured work that beautifully embodies the best elements of what Chasny has done throughout his career. At their core, the songs would make for solid folk tunes but he builds them into something more transcendent. [First added to this chart: 03/02/2020]

The emotional resonance of music has always been the thing that has most infatuated me. On many of the great records, there's an intense connection being made between the artist and the listener. The artist opens themselves up in a truly revealing way, and the listening gives that act of expression the kind of attention that may otherwise never happen via direct conversation. It's deeply therapeutic for the artist and the listener. On The Weather Up There, jazz drummer/composer Jeremy Cunningham draws from the deep well of emotions felt from the death of his brother, and produces an emotionally cathartic record. It's also another testament to just how great the Chicago jazz scene is right now. [First added to this chart: 03/09/2020]

Back in the early aughts, Bright Eyes rapidly ascended to indie stardom, and I was one of the people who became an obsessive listener. At the time, Conor Oberst appeared to be a generational voice that I’d be listening to for decades. Then my interest began to wane around the time of the release of 2007’s Cassadaga. Then Conor started releasing albums under his own name, and while good, they just seemed to lack that emotional urgency of early Bright Eyes records. The People’s Key was solid, but no Fevers And Mirrors. Down in the Weeds, Where the World Once Was isn’t just the first Bright Eyes record in a nearly decade, it also may be the best in a long time. It makes sense that Oberst would tap into that special something again as the United States goes apocalyptic. He’s always been a voice for the lonely melancholy artist. I'm just diving into Bandcamp this year. #1 source. I've heard some duds for sure, but it's been rewarding. I'm finding a lot of publications being overly negative and a little boring as of late and I'm not sure why... straying away from them for the time being. The slate for the spring looks crazy packed too, I'm sure you won't have any problems finding yourself buried underneath an unending queue.
