I would argue that this album is softer and perhaps more accessible than Foxtrot and The Lamb, mainly because of Collins' voice (NOT the direction of the band...that would come later). They were just as progressive here as they were on their previous four albums. The album's sound is probably closest to Selling England: Collins sings a lot like Gabriel did on that album (probably because his voice is softer and more soulful), and there's about an equal proportion of ballads and heavier tracks. Collins isn't as edgy a singer as Gabriel, but the band compensates by playing with more aggression on tracks like Dance on a Volcano. Collins' drumming is particularly powerful on this album: he's jazzy and fast. Hell, Los Endos is borderline fusion due to the style of drumwork. This album is a legitimate contender for Genesis' best for two reasons: (1) The musicianship is sharper than ever before, and (2) Even with Gabriel out of the picture, the songwriting and singing didn't take a hit. Remarkably, the band neither improved nor devolved due to Gabriel's departure. That says a lot about a band! I think Gabriel's departure was good for all parties involved. Banks, Rutherford, and Collins would eventually develop a mutual interest in crafting pop songs, and Gabriel had free reign to experiment with styles outside of Genesis' core sound. Both Gabriel and Genesis would knock each other off the charts in the future, FYI."  [+]  Reply

Brian May also contributes another rocker in, white man, which features some fantastic guitar. Freddie Mercury also contributes three of his best with, the glorious gospel rock of, somebody to love, the high camp of, good old fashioned lover boy, and his beautiful ballad, you take my breath away, which I think is even better than love of my life from the last album. Elsewhere Roger Taylor's, drowse, is an underrated gem. The closing, teo torriate, is a lovely singalong . I still feel that, the millionaire waltz, is a lesser version of bo rhap, and same goes for John Deacon's, you and I, in comparison with, you're my best friend. All in all, not quite as good as a night at the opera, but still a very good album. "  [+]  Reply

But. I do maintain that I believe it would have more of an emotional impact if it was less over-produced, though I do understand what people are saying about Steely Dan "doing it right". The album sounds a lot like a mix of Billy Joel and Stevie Wonder, but much more jammy than both. Kid Charlemagne is a real hit. The songs with a little more grove in them, like the fOnk on this one, serves the record well and cancels out a bit of that over-produced "esteem" that they have going on. The two following songs are also brilliant, Caves of Altamira and Don't Take Me Alive. And the album remains incredibly consistent all the way through. The mouth-guitar on Haitian Divorce is really cool. Lots of different sounds on this. Brilliant musicianship all the way through. Opened my eyes to these guys I have to say."  [+]  Reply

Every song on here possesses something that you will enjoy and every track is at least good if not better. Their build up is sensational and they really allow every song to properly breathe which gives us a fantastic experience. The instrumentation is beautiful and is such a high level that it mesmerises me in places. This is exemplified on Song Within A Song and Air Born which are both just phenomenal. We are also treated to a varied display of instruments as well, all of which are played brilliantly with the flute being a personal favourite of mine. The flow of the music is very smooth as well with it feeling very cohesive and by the end you feel like you have had a true journey. However, I do think the final track Lunar Sea is a bit weaker than all the other ones as it starts slow but the final 4 minutes of that song does redeem it a little. Overall, a fantastic prog rock album that I enjoy every time I play it and it deserves so much more praise than it receives. "  [+]  Reply
