Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 2% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 78.1/100, a mean average of 77.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 80.7/100. The standard deviation for this album is 18.0.

This is probably one of the best folk albums of the decade, maybe one of the best ever. Every song on it is excellent. Criminally underrated though.

Isakov's 3rd masterpiece, and in all likelihood not his last. He may be a bit of an underground name but his songs have been featured in many shows, commercials, and movies. It's great to see his name getting out there in some way. He can do more with just an acoustic guitar and his voice than just about anyone today. He's a special talent. Favorite songs: The Universe, Amsterdam, Saint Valentine.

Born in South Africa and now a resident of Boulder, Colorado, Gregory Alan Isakov has quietly established himself as one of the best indie folk singer-songwriters in today's music scene. I first heard him on the recommendation of a colleague obsessed with Canadian bands such as the Deep Dark Woods and Rural Alberta Advantage, and although Isakov's sound is a little different from those bands, he's similarly immediately likeable and listenable. He's not particularly prolific, but what he lacks in quantity he's more than made up for in consistent quality. My favorite track from The Weatherman is "Living Proof," a song that evokes the tender innocence of young adulthood: "Oh Darlin, pardon me / Can you help me remember / When we were all flying free / We were dust from our bodies / And we were flicker and flame, yeah we burned till the morning." Yup, I remember that well. And I like to think I've still got some of that raw energy in me, even now.
