Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by hahol

I think personal charts always are feelings, combined with nostalgic connections to your youth and childhood favourites melted together with lifeexperiences and strong impressions from the past. I can not point at classic albums from the near past, because defining classics takes time! A great example is Nick Drake!
Some 25 years passed before his genius was rediscovered! I hope there are still several other artists out there to be appreciated and yet are to be discovered from the hidden past!

Bowie's most timeless work to date. Life on Mars is top class, Quicksand as well. A superb collection of songs of overwhelming calibre. Great lyrics too. His most accomplished album and before Ziggiemania. [First added to this chart: 10/02/2014]

Procol Harum made records combining blues and classical music, a very rare accomplishment. A whiter shade of pale of course is their most memorable song, but this album as a whole show them explore their formula in many directions. Robin Trower's guitar work, Gary Brooker's voice and keyboard connected with superb pieces like Luskus Delph, the title track, Simple sister make this record a pure pleasure! Sandy Denny is Britain's best folksinger ever. Her interpretive ability, vulnerable and emphatic voice is unique.
She duets with Robert Plant on Battle of Evermore, a track from Led Zeppelin IV and made this record on her own in the same period. Listen to the sublime title track, Late November, John the Gun and Crazy Lady Blues, Next time around. Her work with Fairport Convention and Fotheringay is also worth searching out!

It might have been on top here, but I feel Revolver is a little bit too much over the top in experimentation and studioresearching activities. There are masterful songs like For no one, Here, there and everywhere, Eleanor Rigby, Good day sunshine here, but the overall atmosphere is overwhelmed by the experimental track Tomorrow never knows. An influential record for the time to come and a great achievement indeed. [First added to this chart: 10/23/2014]

It was impossible to avoid a compilation this time! I think The Stones has some magnificent singles and one of them is an alltime- favourite: Honky tonk woman. There are several other starhits here like Jumping Jack Flash,Satisfaction, Paint it black. Stones had good albums too,(Let it bleed, Sticky fingers,Beggars banquet) but some of their singles were simply awesome! [First added to this chart: 10/02/2014]

Echoes is one of their strongest tracks ever, building up from Rick Wright's "ping" to the desert climax and the beautiful peaceful melodic end. A symphonic masterpiece and a great promise for what to come in the future.

Yes in their prime time! Every member is contributing and the synergy of their combined talents are showing off.
Roundabout, Heart of the sunrise, Long distance runaround, The Fish, Mood for a day are all fantastic tracks where the technical ability within the group are just stunning! A glorious record!!

This album is so underrated among Peter Gabriel's catalogue! In the midst of punkdomination in his homeland, Gabriel answers with an aggressive and mindstorming couple of songs, full of anger, fear and sarcastic hints. The music builds up a storming and inventive atmosphere, Robert Fripp on guitar and "Frippertronics" contributes to the soundscape too. A superb album ! [First added to this chart: 10/02/2014]

A sensation when it appeared in 97 and still an influential force inspiring plenty of artists today. Maybe a little overrated, but this is a masterpiece ...that is a fact. The dark side of the moon for the 90's generation, Thom Yorke's vocals and Johnny Greenwood's guitar are dynemite producing some of the most adventerous sounds and compositions before the millennium. Paranoid Android is an enigmatic piece of work, along with Subterranean homesick alien, Lucky, Karma Police, No surprises etc. etc. A stunning record! [First added to this chart: 10/02/2014]

King Crimson as a trio, John Wetton, Bill Bruford and Robert Fripp are dynamite on this album. Forceful and surprising, innovative and creative are keywords to describe the music. Loud and uncompromising, but this is not heavy metal, rather more "progmetal-fusion".
The trilogy of "Lark's tongue in aspic, "Starless and bible black" and this album showed them from another side than the direction started with "In the court of..". A must have in my collection!

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 6% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 88.7/100, a mean average of 89.1/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 89.1/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 8.9.

I respect your comment that "defining classics takes time," but I don't find my favorite albums are always classics. And to take that a step further, sometimes I'm just worn out on the classics. I wish there was more outisde of the 60s and 70s, but regardless nice chart with the best descriptions I've read in a while.

Some interesting picks. Great to see some unknown artist and some classics I give 90 points for that.

Not only do you have amazing albums included (from MJ to The Byrds), your descriptions are short and perfect, showing off your emotional intelligence and intellectuality. Don't let NE1 tell otherwise :)

Even if the music is not generally my cup of tea, the care you've taken in writing for each of these albums is astonishing and impressive. That said, I don't think I agree with your statement: "I can not point at classic albums from the near past, because defining classics takes time!" - this shouldn't be a list of albums you 'think' are classics, these are just your favourite albums!! The whole idea of 'classics' is a subjective construction anyway, I fear that some underground picks might miss your radar because of this standardisation of the rock canon. Would be nice to see some more of your fringe tastes come through!!
