The perfect hip hop album. Tight compact listen, vivid imagery, the struggle of a young man coming of age. Nas reinvents NY as the birthplace of the genre. His lyrical ability on here is nothing short of outstanding and has undeniably influenced many of the most technical rappers that would follow - namely Eminem, Kendrick, J. Cole, Aesop Rock, DOOM, and many more. Nas really broke the mold by incorporating multiple producers (which was rare at the time) - and above all the record has aged superbly. No rap album will ever top this.

A wild ride through the heart of somebody who really knows themself. Sufjan explores new sounds on this project, and I believe it will go down as his best. This album helped me a lot after going through heartbreak. The builds and drops are insane, and lyrics (while simple) provide shocking insight to Sufjan's internal struggles. Impossible Soul is possibly the most daring and beautiful piece of music of the millenium.

My favorite album of all time, and I honestly don't see that ever changing. I saw Bon Iver perform this live at Coachella 2017 and let's just say that experience changed my life forever... no exaggeration. Aside from my personal connection to this record, the music is so haunting, unconventional, and unique that it's hard to ignore. I think it builds off of Age of Adz and Kid A to an extent, but it really gets into new territory. The fact that a new instrument was created to make this album says something (look up the Messina). Each song on this joint is memorable in it's own way and tackles a different aspect of Vernon's psyche. The numerical references to sacred geometry give this album a divine, though never preachy, vibe. They also give insight to Vernon's personal memory and allow listeners to quantify this experience in such a unique way. Vernon's lyrics capture the essence of the music and really allow his sentiments to be felt. 33 "GOD" captures his existential struggle perfectly and forces him to move on from something that has been so ingrained in him. For me this album is about learning to love oneself despite whatever circumstances you may have gone through, and learning to accept yourself for what you are.

Another true milestone in hip hop. Kanye redefined what it meant to be a rapper with this release, touching on issues previously inconceivable for a hip hop artist. The production was ridiculously ahead of it's time and this album marked the start of what would become a sonic revolution in music. Lyricism is also razor sharp with double entrendres, unique flows, and multisyllabic rhyme schemes littered throughout the lengthy tracklist. Never a dull moment. Features are tasteful and only reinforce Kanye's message. I put this over MBDTF simply because of the old school lyricism and Ye's hunger every fucking time if grabs the mic on this album. You can feel Kanye's ambition to be the best on this album, and that's what he would go on to do.

While TCD might be my fav from Yeezy, MBDTF is definately his magnum opus. I was 15 when this came out and I could not stop watching the visuals that accompanied it. This album is grandiose, epic, and heartbreaking. At this point in his career, Kanye was known for his ego, yet musically he borrows from his contemporaries generously and warps them into his own INSANE production seamlessly. Not much else can be said that hasn't already. Kanye cemented himself as a truly unique artist that will be remembered forever on this.

Nobody talks about how big of a turning point this was for hip hop. It builds off of the groundwork set forth by People's Instictive Travels and Low End Theory to give a refreshing take on hip hop. Production would grow to inspire the likes of Outkast and later Kanye.

Captures existential crises unlike any other album. Connect to this personally a lot. Definitely not an easy listen but a vulnerable, honest, and undeniably relateable record. Essential.

Really connected with me as a teenage and I actually found this to have aged really well. Awesome punchlines and honesty throughout. The last 4 songs are one of my favorite stretches in any album. [First added to this chart: 08/22/2017]

Conceptually out of this world. The whole "LongChain" lore surrounding this album was handled extremely well. I know its an interesting pick for top 10, but I love how this album forces you to dig into the lyrics. With every listen comes new interpretations, hidden themes you missed, etc. and on top of that the aquatic production fits the record's theme extremely well. Sister tracks "Alan Forever" and "Jonylah Forever" are just one example of the overwhelming amount of layer this album possesses. Didn't think Lupe could top Tetsuo and Youth but here we are.

Wow, coming back to your chart I'm even more impressed. Age of Adz and 22, A Million are two albums that I think are massively underrated in this world, glad to see someone that likes them both so much as well!

I like this list! Especially since you have three Bjork albums, nice! Some Aphex Twin, awesome. You don't seem to like 60s music haha. Bunch of hip hop which is cool. I like a bunch of hip hop but I honestly can't get into Kanye, even though he's highly rated.

Some great choices you've got here! Especially love seeing 22 A Million and Age of Adz. They are both so great and so underappreciated. And of course the old school hip-hop is very nice too. Keep up the good work!
