Here’s the EMF formula for instant success. Take a high energy British rock band, throw in some scratching, add a heavy, heavy dose of Andrew Dice Clay samples, and a lead singer who sounds twelve-ish. And there you have one of the strangest and catchiest singles of 1991, EMF’s “Unbelievable”. This song, and Clay’s trademark “OH!”, were everywhere, and it seemed that EMF was destined for a long and fruitful career. Oh, but the gods of the one-hit wonder world work in mysterious ways, and as soon as the song slipped from the charts, EMF faded quickly into history. Actually, four singles from Schubert Dip charted in America, but they are remembered only for the one song. They’ve broken up and regrouped many times, but only made 3 albums, the last in 1995. Such is the strangeness of the 90’s band that utilizes the Clay man to gain a hit record.
“Unbelievable” is a great song, and while nothing else on the album comes close to its catchiness, it’s really not a bad record. What they lack in consistent songwriting, they make up for in pure energy and exuberance. “I Believe”, “Children”, and “Lies” are the better tracks, and “Girl Of An Age” is cool, and even has a spoken intro by Bert and Ernie. “Lies” originally included Mark David Chapman reciting the lyrics to John Lennon’s “Watching The Wheels”, which was quickly removed at Yoko Ono’s request. The album is actually easy to listen to, and keeps the energy going all the way through. Too bad they didn’t have the magic of “Unbelievable” more than once. EMF could have been a fun band to follow through the 90’s, rather than just a curiosity remembered for just one song. But Schubert Dip is really not bad at all. Worth a spin or two. On Every Street may be the quietest and most inconspicuous final album ever made. It had been 6 years since Dire Straits released its biggest record Brothers In Arms, and they had dropped a live album and a greatest hits disc in the meantime. Mark Knopfler was getting his solo career on, and everyone just assumed that Dire Straits had died. So when On Every Street came out, no one even blinked. Which is probably a good thing, because in the moment of how do you top your last album, the Straits did a flat out choke.
The single was "Heavy Fuel", a lesser attempt at "Money For Nothing Part 2". And that was it, because there really wasn't another single here. Although there were some good songs...but the real truth was that Dire Straits was never Brothers In Arms, they were the albums that came before it. And this may have been one of those, except that they sound like they're mailing it in. For a lot of bands, this would have been a career high mark. For Dire Straits? This is as low as you can imagine for them. It's listenable, but just don't play it against any of their other work. That way, you won't see it for as disappointing as it really is. Scotland's Primal Scream was a moderately successful indie rock band when they were introduced to the upcoming rave scene. Screamadelica, their third album, brought them their first taste of big success. The album is an interesting mix of rock, house music, gospel, and many other styles. "Movin' On Up" is a great opener, and "Loaded" and "Come Together" are great songs. It's rave music without the droning repetition and n-ts-n-ts-n-ts. A very innovative and good album.
Primal Scream formed in 1982, and are still going strong. Their latest album, Chaosmosis, was released in 2016. [First added to this chart: 08/14/2012]
