Produced by Butch Vig. Nevermind was the album that changed everything at the exact moment it was needed. Tired hair metal was becoming dronish, and "Smells like Teen Spirit" gave us all hope for the future. This album reminded us all that we didn't have to follow the formula, that we didn't have to make crappy power ballads, that it was okay to rock without pyrotechnic guitar solos, and that you didn't have to wear spandex and makeup to be a star. Thank you, Nirvana. Always. [First added to this chart: 04/11/2012]

Produced by Rick Parashar & Pearl Jam. Pearl Jam is not just a band, it's a brotherhood. That's what has always made them great...you can feel the comraderie in their music. And when they have songs, they are simply great. On their debut, Ten, they had songs for days, and the result is a poweful and strong album connected by the brotherhood they already had. Grunge, blah blah blah. I don't care about how much flannel Eddie Vedder wore in the 90's. Ten is a great album, and I feel for those who don't get it. [First added to this chart: 04/11/2012]

1991-MCA

1. Good Ol' Boy (Gettin' Tough)
2. Devil's Right Hand
3. I Ain't Ever Satisfied

14. She's About A Mover
15. The Rain Came Down
16. Dead Flowers

How could you possibly go wrong with a live album from Steve Earle, circa 1991? Unfortunately, you can go wrong right here. Shut Up & Die was recorded in 1990 in Canada, and it's maybe the biggest disappointment in Earle's career. The song selection is great, the band sounds good...but the problem is Earle himself. His voice is shot, and he sounds like he'd been drinking for quite awhile before the show started...and during. He struggles to stay on key for much of the album, and by the time it gets to the end, he's doing a complete butchering of the Stones' "Dead Flowers". Even though this does rock at times, it should be a huge disappointment for Earle fans.

This was the first of 6 live albums by Earle. Seek out any of the other five...you'll be much better off.

1991-ELEKTRA
Produced By DANNY GATTON

1. Funky Mama
2. Elmira St. Boogie
3. Blues Newburg
4. Quiet Village
5. Red Label
6. In My Room
7. The Simpsons
8. Muthaship
9. Pretty Blue
10. Fandingus
11. Slidin' Home

If you've never heard of Danny gatton, that's okay. He was known as The World's Greatest Unknown Guitarist. After a slow career that saw him release only two albumns in the 70's and one in the 80's, he came out swinging in the 90's. Between 1990 and 1994, he put out 5 albums. Gatton was known for melding jazz, rockabilly, surf, and blues styles into his own unique sound.

88 Elmira Street was the second of his 90's releases, and is considered to be his best. And for good reason: his version of The Beach Boys classic "In My Room" is worthwhile by itself. Most of the tracks here are Gatton originals, and all are instrumental. This is not the typical guitar album of its time with screaming pyrotechnics: this is straight out great playing. If you can find this, or any of his other works, it's more than worth checking out. (Gatton committed suicide in 1994.)
