Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by Spyglass (2020)

My chart is ordered from best to worst. These albums I have chosen are albums that go above and beyond the boundaries of music, and have brilliance to share in whatever forms they take. All of the albums I've chosen are very special to me in one way or another, even if they're outside of my comfort zone, because a comfort zone doesn't matter when you're trying to comprehend all forms of music.

I've added little stories that describe my feelings when listening to each album. They're quite odd, but I love a little odd now and then.

"Innovation. Organization. Demonstration. Exaggeration. Surrealism. Forget about the whole 'sugar, spice and everything nice' combo that all women strive for. That comes to me naturally, but that is not what defines me. You can call me a woman, but you can never lump me in with the rest of the women on the planet."

"They say I am a poet, and I am a wraith. They call me a preacher, and a slayer of the soul. I am made of metal and flesh, and I am born of fire and tears. Some say I am both a master and a puppet, but I think what I am is... drawn to my humanity."

"I love it when people call me insane! It lets me know what I'm doing is right. I love it when my funky technique and blockbuster style are mistaken for soulless ramblings and lackluster musicianship. In fact, my favorite thing about it is when I, a pop musician, get to mock those who claim my vinyl albums have backwards satan-spewings by playing with even more funk in front of their faces! Take this to heart: opportunities like that come once in a lifetime."

"Music is the deadliest weapon. Pain is the topic we all sing about, confusing it with a stress reliever when in reality it becomes all we think about, all we are. When the man in the black coat comes to commission you, remember that a requiem's only purpose is to comfort death. But what of when the music empowers it?"

Dance-Pop / Contemporary R&B

"I met here at the bar. They were having a 10th Anniversary of Disco party, whatever that means. I saw her on the dance floor doing movies I didn't know were possible, as if she were a student of contortionism. She danced like a soul free from its body, attempting to seduce the angels to allow her into Heaven. Having taken dance lessons myself, I decided to watch and wait to see how she would treat the other boys before I took my stand. She rejected them all, as if they were trying to be too human as opposed to her almost astral movement, something spiritual. I was the only one who could understand her. I didn't try to mimic her movements: I mimicked her philosophy, translating it into my bodily movements. I wasn't very good, but she could see that I understood what she was doing. And so she danced with me. Afterwards, she got in the back of my '85 Mustang and we had the wildest night of our lives, especially when she revealed the reason why she could dance like that to me. For anyone who sees me like this, don't be scared. She taught me that there's nothing to be afraid of, not even monsters."

Life in Radio City isn't so bad. The expected thing about Radio City is that life is a lot like the songs you hear anywhere else. There's love and heartbreak, and there's always a song to go with each special moment, even if it's a dull one or a sad one. People here seem to fixate on the happy ones."

"The jewels are fully polished. Take then through the storm and don't let go of them. Soon they'll reflect light in their own special way. These are the jewels we've been searching for throughout our whole lives. Rumours about love and loss surround them; the stories of life and death are embedded in their craftsmanship; and while it all sounds like pretty nonsense, there's a strange sense of fulfillment and meaning emitting from them. There are few gems on Earth that glimmer like these."

"From the deepest depths of England comes a band of high social status. Their lack of sophistication for British society is only matched by the pain in their hearts that they serenade to like lullabies for the teenagers of yesteryear. They are the Smiths. And they have a message for you, one that you don't wnat to hear, but will ring in your head forever: The Queen Is Dead."

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 1% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a mean average rating of 91.0/100. The trimmed mean (excluding outliers) is 93.2/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 9.5.

The notes themselves deserves 110/100, brilliant work and a great list! As one trying to write something for my own chart for a veery loooong time, i had a great time going through it and tbh it inspired me!!!

And how beautifully this sums up Fleetwood Mac's Rumours:
''Let us all sing about how the hate we have for each other brings us together as friends.''

Love the notes throughout, they've made me reappraise some albums I tend to keep overlooking. Also, we have very little albums in common, which always excites me. Few things are as exciting as new discoveries.
