Dylan once said that he didn't understand how anyone could enjoy listening to this album. He couldn't grasp how people could take so much pleasure from another person's misery. However, I don't hear an album about sadness, I hear an album about life. [First added to this chart: 08/20/2012]

Bringing It All Back Home

The lyrics that sinuously weave their way through this album weren't written by Bob Dylan. They couldn't have been. One man can't speak words this penetrating, discerning, and transcendental without it completely destroying him. No, they must have been etched in stone tablets and then sent down from the very Gates of Eden for which Dylan croons. Listening to this album makes me feel like those Nazis in the final scene of "Raiders" where the Ark of the Covenant is opened. They receive a singular moment of ethereal wisdom before their faces melt in the most dramatic and horrifying of ways. Yeah, it's that good. [First added to this chart: 08/20/2012]

Some artists are so inspiring that they make you want to be just like them. However, listening to this album makes you go "crap, I can't do that" and then quit the music scene altogether. The fifty or so minutes this album lasts is just enough time to dash the hopes of just about any aspiring songwriter. [First added to this chart: 08/20/2012]

I'm a major Dylan fanboy, but this album (like the White Album above) loses half of a point by virtue of being a double LP. Frankly, I think "Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat" and "Pledging My Time" sound more like B-Sides than album fillers. Having said that, "Visions of Johanna" is a masterpiece, and "Forth Time Around" is my all time favorite Dylan tune. [First added to this chart: 08/20/2012]
