Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. This is certainly better than most of the stereotyped magazine lists one finds difficult to read after having read Piero Scaruffi or Joe S. Harrington’s revelatory Top 100 Albums in the 11th to 14th issues of ‘Blatitude’.
Whilst nothing about the list is revelatory, it does avoid at least the very worst of stereotyped fad pop music, and does include (small) helpings of genres of great cultural importance but poor recognition from the ageing Silent and Boom Generations, most critically metal and post-rock.

i love this chart! i like the selection of sonic youth's sister at #11, though i prefer daydream nation...nice to see closer, tago mago, ziggy stardust, cure for pain, grace, marquee moon, disintegration, the stooges, angel dust, the king crimson selections (though i'd have switched their places), tool, atdi... while i don't include compilations on my charts, new order's substance may very well be my favorite one...also, the metal (though scarce) was a welcome addition: metallica, slayer, sabbath, and helmet's strap it on were nice touches...29 albums in common with my chart and many more artists as well as strikingly similar genre and decade distribution.
