Simply put, an album like no other. Not a wasted breath through this record's 80 minutes. This album's sound is phenomenal and will be remembered for that alone, but what we'll look back on in reverence for some time is Kendrick and company blending the music of now and yesteryear to fit the narrative of his brilliantly woven tale.

To Pimp A Butterfly is art. Auditory. Cultural. Historical. Not just an epic slab of music, but an era-encapsulating, genre-defining masterpiece.

Not a breathtaking album. No. A throat-grasping juggernaut of a tightly packaged offering of experimental fucking bops. Not a dull crayon in the box and not a second of sound nor space that isn't curiously evolving into some other perfectly grotesque cacophony in the pit of one of the headphone channels. One of the best overall pieces you'll find in "mainstream" rap. I could listen to this album over and over and not grow tired, there's always something new to discover and always more of the story to piece together. The guy is a gifted storyteller and one of hip hop's finest.

While the majority of this album is great, it's the middle that astounds me every single time. The run of tracks from Good Kid to Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst is an unbelievably good stretch of material that boasts more outstanding bars, mind-blowing beats, and top level artistic dynamism than most artist's finest full albums.

This album changed my life. Yeah as a casual listen, it’s mainly just an incredibly tight and together rock album with a number of highlights, great flow, and it sounds brilliant! But it's more than that to me.

It's my adolescence and the album that guided my out the throes of it. The awkward, wandery, very uncool years right before you find the people and things you really want to connect with going forward. Adjusting to high school, seasonal depression, and not being able to be happy with any god damn hair cut... yes, those years (or These Days maybe??). Wasting Light was the guiding light I followed out of all of that. It couldn't have been released at a more perfect time and I absolutely adore this power pop masterpiece.

One of the most ear-gripping and mind enveloping records on this list or really any other, Cave comes through with a late career masterpiece. The best moments of this album spiral up and outward until they are auditory mosaics as gorgeous as the record’s cover. Waiting For You made me bawl on first listen. I don't know if I heard a better straight up rock album in the 10's than this one. ...Like Clockwork unfolds like a audio book of nursery rhymes on acid. The album's flow and amount of seriously good songs one after the other is remarkable as are the quirky sounds and production methods that make this album blossom. I Appear Missing is top notch. This album floors me. And then some. Emotionally expansive soundscapes that stretch from the size of a mosquito to an entire swarm. Electric and eclectic, I come to this record to get something I can’t quite get from *any* other. [First added to this chart: 04/03/2021]

We Got It From Here.. is not only a triumph given many of its circumstances, it’s an absolute dream of a hip-hop album. Each of the record’s tracks offer something beautifully unique and each of the albums featured guests feel as much a part of the Tribe as Tip and Phife. This album exceeded my expectations, I think a lot of other people’s too. [First added to this chart: 03/27/2021]
