One of the most ear-gripping and mind enveloping records on this list or really any other, Cave comes through with a late career masterpiece. The best moments of this album spiral up and outward until they are auditory mosaics as gorgeous as the record’s cover. Waiting For You made me bawl on first listen. A barrage of foreword thinking songs and songwriting while still giving clever nods to the past. Titanic Rising absolutely cooks as it gets going. Beautiful and engaging. [First added to this chart: 02/19/2021]

Songs of love, loss, lost love, found love, self-doubt, self-love, self-hate, and appreciating your mom. Purple Mountains is one of the great and most impactful singer-songwriter records of the decade. One of the decade’s most tragic collections of tales as well. [First added to this chart: 04/01/2021]

I didn't think I would like this album as much as I did but, fuck, Tyler really impressed me with the ever-so-obvious conviction he pours into both the music and the lyrical themes on IGOR. There were some terrific production choices and methods implemented that give an already unique artist more of a voice and a sense of a direction toward the future. A David Bowie like character switch that could have fallen flat, but he dove right in and nailed the fucking landing on this one. [First added to this chart: 04/29/2020]

I'm a huge Tool fan, maybe you'll see this and think it's too high, and maybe you're right, but I think it's a worthy addition to one of the great catalogs in progressive/alternative metal. Additionally, there's a probability it will be listened to more than many of the records that place higher on this chart. Like many, I was blown away with the performances on this record namely from Dan on drums and Adam on guitar and I won't soon forget the ridiculous build up to this album's release.

However, what standouts to me most is the lyrical content given the time of release.

Fear Inoculum was released roughly 6 months before the global Covid-19 pandemic, but go back and look at the lyrics and see how many words we’ve been hearing and seeing the last number of weeks (I write this in quarantine at the end of April, 2020). I liked Maynard’s somewhat understated and sparse performance when this came out, but I think we’ll need to look back on this as an A+ moment in terms of a lyricist not just writing great words, but a remarkable depiction of the current climate. A beautiful yet terrifying coincidence or Maynard doing his homework before any of us had the chance to on this pandemic? We may never find out, but once again, credit where credit is due.
