Beautiful, sentimental album featuring acoustic guitar and low-fi production. Musically simple, but this only adds to its intimacy, charm, and unadorned sentimentality. Jeff Mangum manically delivers utterly surreal lyrics that shouldn't make any sense, but are so poignant and imbued with some abstruse yearning that they make sense on a visceral level. Every individual song is perfect and unique, but contributes to the consistent sonic aesthetic that is somewhere between penny arcade and a lonely guy singing around a campfire late at night, crooning into absolute darkness. Melancholy, bittersweet ode to life, death, and the beauty therein.
