This is a really excellent album, I had been after a decent vinyl copy for years and was so glad to come across a near mint copy a few weeks ago. Bombay Calling is my favourite track, Deep Purple, I am so disappointed with you, I thought you had written Child in Time! [First added to this chart: 12/24/2023]

Excellent psychedelic album. Can almost smell the incense and other concoctions on the air. Recording quality not the best but that kind of adds to the experience. Tough call between this and Crown of Creation. [First added to this chart: 01/27/2025]

This album is a very different affair compared to 1967's 'Goodbye and Hello'. I prefer the former but don't dislike Happy Sad, the vocal Is delivered like an instrument, it climbs and falls with crescendos and decrescendos all underpinned by acoustic guitar, electric piano and xylophone. The ten minute long third track (title too long to type!) is my favourite with the double bass and electric guitar flourishes. The album is a mixture of folk and jazz with happy and sad undertones so the album does live up to its name. [First added to this chart: 08/14/2021]

I love the Jazz leanings of 'Little Umbrellas'. Track 2 side 2 (vinyl) then moves into an improvisation which is very 'Gongesque', particularly with the sax right at the front of the mix taking the lead through the first part and then handing over to violin in the second half. In contrast track 3 side 3 moves back into more of a Latin Jazz feel. The guitar soloing on 'Willie The Pimp' is superb! I love the contrast on this album and wish Zappa had turned out more consistent albums like this which focus on musicianship rather than a lot of the satirical drivel on other later albums. I have got pretty much all of the core Zappa albums and most apart from a few are spoiled by the satirical or damright crude (not that I'm a prude) and unnecessary drivel. Soul and funk meet psychedelia and it works! Superb album, production quality on the vinyl re-issue is excellent. Side two of the vinyl is the best of the album in my opinion. Great vocals through the whole album along with a plethora of unusual vocal effects including what sounds like an early vocoder but obviously isn't. [First added to this chart: 10/16/2020]

There are some great psychedelic tracks on this album but What's Become of the Baby is a challenging listen. This an Anthem of the Sun were Grateful Dead at their psychedelic peak. [First added to this chart: 02/13/2022]
