Though this is one of the greatest guitar rock albums ever made, especially if you like effects pedals, I often wonder how much better the album would have done sales-wise if they'd just taken the trouble to look the word "anything" up in the dictionary. [First added to this chart: 08/31/2022]

I liked the Specials, and Fun Boy Three too, but I wasn't some sort of "huge fan" of any previous Terry Hall-fronted musical project. But then this came out, and I had to re-evaluate my entire life up to that point. These guys had recorded some of the best pop songs ever, and they didn't even win a Nobel Prize or the Eurovision Song Contest or anything. There's just no justice in the world! Not even during the Eighties! Anyway, during the re-evaluation process I discovered that life goes on and on and on and... well, you get the picture. [First added to this chart: 08/31/2022]

The guys in XTC were really careful to ensure that nobody knew the Dukes of Stratosphear were really them until this mini-LP had already appeared in the record shops. They had to record it, press it, print the covers, package it, and distribute it, all without anyone finding out. You couldn't achieve that kind of secrecy today, since nobody other than the XTC guys can be trusted with anything, and what's more, there aren't that many record shops left to begin with. And the ones that are still around are all full of spies and investigative reporters. [First added to this chart: 08/31/2022]

When this album came out, I remember thinking: "Ahh, they've finally decided to quit reinventing themselves and become actual rock stars." And I was right! I also remember thinking, "I need a better job, a better car, and maybe a girlfriend who doesn't think I'm an idiot." This was 1985, you understand — just about everybody was thinking the same thing. By 1986 I was thinking, "zero out of three isn't bad, but at least The Cure are rock stars now." [First added to this chart: 08/31/2022]
