Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. Hi CellarDoor,
now that I checkt out your top 10...
I`m not impressed by William Basinski, Tim Hecker and Lovesliescrushing.
Ray Montgomery is OK and the rest of the top 10 is brilliant.
(5 in common with my contemporary classical crossover chart)

Wow! When I saw that the top 2 albums are the two albums I've become totally obsessed with lately, I knew this was a good source of similarly "vibed" music and so I am pretty excited to explore this list further.
