Track 1 is pretty poppy and fun, track 2 has a middle eastern vibe to it but still sounds like it could be the same album as track 1. Then track 3, Pyramid of Bones, comes on and I’m blindsided by a straight up metal track. There are some moments on here that remind me of classic strokes, one prog rock song with some electronic, a somewhat new wave song, and an Origin of Symmetry era Muse like track. Overall the album is great and somewhere in my top 3 for the year so far."  [+]  Reply

And it seems our boys have had their hearts handed to them once or twice since their shimmering debut. There is a haze of melancholy that hangs over this album. Plus, the crisp pace and immediacy of the debut is traded in for a more lazy, nonchalant sound as the songs take a decidedly more leisurely approach to their destination. They've expanded their sound a bit too it seems and started dosing on a steady diet of kiwi rock as well which fits in well with their other jangle pop influences. Besides the songs being a bit more consistent on this one, both albums are excellent and complement each other nicely. Grade: A. As Daydreamer recently pointed out, this is quite a different album from their debut. More spacious, pensive and considerably slowed down from the preppy, assured jangle pop of their debut. I can’t really decide which one I like best as they are both excellent and I’d even say essential modern jangle pop. I’m going to flip a coin and put this one slightly ahead of the debut, but I now consider their debut an essential Real Estate album since it does have such a different sound. "  [+]  Reply

It’s electronic, it’s avant-garde and it’s rock all in one. It’s incoherent, yet somehow there’s some kind of coherency within it. It’s mind-boggling because it shouldn’t be so good. It should be odd or slightly off-putting, yet it’s really good. The lead singer was one of the most confusing parts about the band. At first I thought it was a man, turns out it’s a woman. She’s got a great voice, but for a woman, it’s a strange voice. At times it almost sounds like Bon Scott. It’s a really good album though and definitely worth listening to. "  [+]  Reply

Pom Pom was my first introduction to Ariel Pink, and one of the main things I liked about that album was how crisp the production sounded and how it brought out all the intricacies of the songs. On this album however, the lo-fi aspect drowns out most of the details of the songs. Now I'm not bashing the fact that the recording is "lo-fi"; I love tons of lo-fi artists. But amongst the artists I love in that genre (Neutral Milk Hotel, GBV, Sparklehorse, Daniel Johnston) the lo-fi production serves to enhance the mood of the songs. In all the artists I mentioned, the dirty, gritty production fits in perfectly with the song structures, which are often halfbaked to begin with. In this album, though, it seems like there are fully fledged songs that just happened to be recorded poorly for the sake of it, the result being a bunch of songs that I wish I could hear better. So yeah, the songwriting is great and it's pretty eccentric, but the muffled production really turns me off of it."  [+]  Reply

People have an obsession with watching other people, an obsession with voyeurism (to a point), seeing what other people do in what are typically private situations. It’s evident in our movies, our TV shows and our music (Laura Mulvey has written extensively on this subject). But the beautiful thing about music is it exists as a catharsis, it exists for the purpose of being an outlet for the creator as well as the listener. A musician writes about the emotions they are experiencing or the situation they’re in and people listen to it and say “I was/am in the same spot, and I understand”. Mike Hadreas puts himself on full display for everyone on this album. This album is intimate, like reading someone’s diary, yet it is also triumphant in a way. This album is about dealing with things, dealing with unpleasant things that happen to you, looking them in the eye and refusing to be taken down by them. Whether Hadreas is slowly singing in a voice just above a whisper over a sparse set of instrumentation (typically just a reverbed piano) or singing something more layered and instrumentally involved, you feel a connection to him. The beauty in this album cannot be overstated, it’s powerful, emotionally evocative stuff."  [+]  Reply
