Top 75 Greatest Music Albums by bigeyedfish Unknown

My favorite albums. I get that there's not a lot of variety and that many artists are heavily represented. I think this is OK, since I'm setting out to actually rank my favorite albums and not to demonstrate how totally impressive and diverse my tastes are.

My favorite album. This may not have changed the course of music like so many of the greatest, but I find it to be the all-time pinnacle of songwriting and musicianship. Not just a perfect album, but THE perfect album. From the welcoming introduction of the title track to the mind-shattering finale of "Bartender," every song is one of my favorites. In years to come, DMB will be praised far more than today. [First added to this chart: 12/01/2013]

Perfect songwriting, incredibly potent and emotional vocal delivery, exquisite guitar work, and poetic lyrics that will have you bawling for sorrow and joy at once. Pure music bliss; there's nothing quite so pretty as this album, and nothing so affecting right in the heart. [First added to this chart: 12/01/2013]

The third album from Rilo Kiley features stronger folk influences than their previous efforts, and a shift in lyrical styling. Singer Jenny Lewis still imbues her words with a strong sense of poetry, but the abstract, surreal musings of The Execution of All Things are replaced with all-too-earthly descriptions and stories. The result? The words are even more beautifully depressing. Meanwhile, the music is often cheery, involving intricate and sunny folk-inspired lead guitar of songs like "The Absence of God" and "A Man/Me/Then Jim;" at other times, however, it turns dark, such as in the stormy climax of "Does He Love You?" or the combative drive of "Love and War (11/11/46)." This is a fantastic album from a fantastic band and only a hairs breadth behind their strongest effort. (#7) [First added to this chart: 12/02/2013]

The first full-length album from indie rock band Rilo Kiley. On Take Offs and Landings, singer Jenny Lewis sings with a youthful innocence as her rather sad - but not quite 'dark' - lyrics struggle to understand the working of people and the world. She may be even more personal here than on The Execution of All Things, especially in songs like "Pictures of Success" and "We'll Never Sleep (God Knows We'll Try)." The rest of the band is cleaner and more spacious than later albums, a style which matches Lewis's sweet voice here perfectly. Take Offs is a supreme work of expressive and confessional indie pop-rock. The trademarks which make Rilo Kiley so great - genuinely thoughtful and thought-provoking lyrics, perfect guitar both acoustic and electric, and impeccably beautiful songwriting - all began here in full force. The album sounds younger, but Rilo Kiley was already brilliant. [First added to this chart: 12/02/2013]

The first (and as of now, only) solo album from Dave Matthews maintains the excellent lyrical and songwriting content of his albums with the Dave Matthews Band - in fact, this batch of songs is among the best of his career. Without the skills and tight companionship of Leroi Moore, Carter Beauford, Stefan Lessard and Boyd Tinsley, however, Some Devil falls short of the strongest efforts by DMB. Still, the album is an absolute gem. The songs are emotional and span both personal experiences and world-assessing judgments. The instrumentation is more conventional than with DMB, forgoing most use of saxophone or violin in favor of the electric guitars of longtime DMB collaborator Tim Reynolds and Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio. The drumming, too, is wildly different: the complex jazz styles and irregular time signatures of Carter Beauford are replaced by simpler, straight-ahead rock. This makes Some Devil possibly the most accessible of Matthews's projects, and his entirely unique songwriting style is affected by the styles of Reynolds and Anastasio, creating a sound to be remembered. The songwriting of guitarist John Frusciante and bassist Flea only got better with time. By the Way, one of the last Chili Peppers albums recorded with the former, has some of the best songs ever written. The followup to Californication, By the Way almost completely abandoned the recklessness which its predecessor had already taken a step back from, resulting in a slew of beautiful melodies, backing vocals, and gorgeous clean guitar. "Can't Stop" and the title track, two which cling in part to the less pretty Peppers of the past, are the biggest hits. More highlights include the rousing "This is the Place," the immaculate "Dosed," the stirring, almost overwhelming "Tear," and the fast and melodic "Minor Thing," just to name a few. Every song is great and the whole thing feels very finished and, well, perfected. [First added to this chart: 12/02/2013]

The Dave Matthews Band's 2009 album was a reinvigoration of their studio vitality, even though it remained a far shot from their original sound and the sessions suffered from the tragic loss of saxophonist Leroi Moore, for whom the album is partially named. Rest in peace, Roi. Even without the Groo Grux King himself on some tracks, DMB delivered a winner. A straight-up electric-guitar rock sound is employed much more successfully than on 2001's Everyday (which, though filled with great songs, was hurt by rushed sessions, production mismatched with DMB, and a lack of input from the band). Rob Cavallo brings the album together marvelously, and it really does feel solid and complete. From the fast-rocking "Shake Me Like a Monkey" to introspective and gentle jewels like "Baby Blue" and "Lying in the Hands of God," Big Whiskey covers quite a bit of material unlike anything from the band's previous albums, and it's all very, very good. The lyrics are highly world-conscious at times, and completely the opposite at others. The big, multi-horn sound of this record is now integrated into the band's live setup and gives every song a fuller feeling than the albums of the past. Though Roi's loss is felt, Jeff Coffin (of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones) stands in excellently. Roi can still be found throughout Big Whiskey, whether in tribute songs ("Why I Am") or the parts he was able to record, most noticeably the opening "Grux" and the hidden "#35," a brief sax jam attached after silence at the end of the closer, "You and Me." Despite the struggles surrounding it and its standing below the classic records of the 90's, Big Whiskey and the Groo Grux King was a great success for the Dave Matthews Band. Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 84.7/100, a mean average of 84.2/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 83.9/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 7.8.

I appreciate the notes, even though I don't necessarily agree with all of them. However, there is not really a lot of variety here. Bowie, Mathews and Floyd alone account for 18 spots altogether. Throw in 5 from The Beatles and 4 from VU and that's 5 artists taking up over half your list.

I like most of the music here and I like to see DMB finally getting some love around here. We have 12 albums in common and almost all of them I've heard. That being said, I think maybe your chart could benefit from a little variety. As big a DMB fan as I am, I don't think 7 (8 really with the Dave solo) of their albums are in the top 50. Maybe you'd like some other jam bands? The Allman Brothers Band, Gov't Mule, Pat McGee Band, The Black Crowes, etc.

Great list, I loved the comments on the album. I do think the charts needs a more variety in artists. I totally agree on the comment you gave about Magical Mystery Tour. It's often overlooked (as far that's possible for a Beatles album), while it's on of their best. I never heard of the dave matthews band or the Pretenders but I checked them out and they sound really good. I'm definitely goin to explore their music more.
