Top 75 Greatest Music Albums
by bigeyedfish Unknown

My favorite albums. I get that there's not a lot of variety and that many artists are heavily represented. I think this is OK, since I'm setting out to actually rank my favorite albums and not to demonstrate how totally impressive and diverse my tastes are.

The Beatles crafted several perfect records in their brief career, masterpieces that would dictate the future of music. All were topped with their last (recorded) album, Abbey Road. The first side is a collection of songs which rest atop the peak of the Beatles' songwriting and production accomplishments, from Harrison's (and arguably the group's) greatest and most moving composition, "Something," to Lennon's epic, grating blues-rock avalanche "I Want You (She's so Heavy);" even McCartney's underrated "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" is a carefully refined gem of pop songwriting and flawless production.
The album, however, is more than just songs. It is a cohesive journey, climaxing with the medley which fills most of side 2. This is the Beatles greatest achievement, a suite so powerful and perfect it elevates this album head and shoulders above the greatest artistic statements of this great band.

If ever the Beatles could be called underrated, it's with the album. Like many of the Beatles greatest moments, Magical Mystery Tour was an accident. The UK EP was great, but only featured the six tracks from side 1 of the US album. In an effort to make more money, Capitol records added the 3 unavailable-on-LP singles from 1967 and their 2 B-sides ("I Am the Walrus," B-side to "Hello Goodbye," was already on the EP). The resulting collection was as cohesive and fantastic as anything the Beatles had yet released, and the colorful sound of the singles fits in perfectly on MMT. "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Penny Lane," two of the Beatles best ever songs, sound right at home here; the arrangements and music are much closer to Magical Mystery Tour than to Sgt. Pepper, though they were originally intended for the latter. Those two, along with "I Am the Walrus" and "All You Need is Love," rank among the best Beatles classics, while "Fool on the Hill" and "Your Mother Should Know" are greatly underrated. Every track is a standout and fulfills a perfect role. I love the gushing arrangements, particularly the flute (or synthesized flute) sounds of "Fool on the Hill" and 'Strawberry Fields Forever." Magical Mystery Tour is truly one of the best Beatles albums, greater than the magnificent Sgt. Pepper which so often overshadows its legacy. [First added to this chart: 12/02/2013]

There were well-built, cohesive albums before this: Highway 61 Revisited, The Doors, Pet Sounds, even the Beatles' own Rubber Soul and Revolver. But Sgt. Pepper took it to a new level. The tracks were no longer just held together, they were almost one, completely inseparable. When was the last time you listened to the title track without "With a Little Help from My Friends?" "A Day in the Life" is easily twice as good when played with the reprise before it, and twice that good when the rest of the record precedes that. Without this example, things like Dark Side of the Moon probably wouldn't have happened. Not to mention Sgt. Pepper's influence on artistic songwriting and production. The entire playing field of popular music was changed here; I won't even talk about what it did to the rest of the world.
And it's damn good. The songs are heavily underrated. "Fixing a Hole" is my favorite here, and the equal of anything on Revolver. "A Day in the Life" needs no explanation. How can a song like "Good Morning, Good Morning," with its incredible tempo and time changes and uniquely awesome melody, be called a lacking song with good production? Of course, the production is good too - just listen to those weird-sounding horns - but that's been talked about enough. Sgt. Pepper is the one of the most important albums ever, and one of the best, too.

One of the greatest moments in the career of the Beatles. Their self-titled double album marks the peak of the Beatles' individual songwriting. Many of the best songs from the four reside here, certainly more than any of their other legendary albums. It is, of course, anything but consistent. Just as the so-called White Album is home to such peaks as "Happiness is a Warm Gun," "Blackbird," and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," it holds within its mess experiments like "Wild Honey Pie" and the dreaded "Revolution 9." It's true that these compositions don't measure up to the best of The Beatles, but in the context of the sprawling collection it all fits together perfectly; I would never skip a track. No other album so disjointed feels like such a true, cohesive masterpiece, and none can list so many songs among the best. [First added to this chart: 12/02/2013]

Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 84.7/100, a mean average of 84.2/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 83.9/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 7.8.

I appreciate the notes, even though I don't necessarily agree with all of them. However, there is not really a lot of variety here. Bowie, Mathews and Floyd alone account for 18 spots altogether. Throw in 5 from The Beatles and 4 from VU and that's 5 artists taking up over half your list.

I like most of the music here and I like to see DMB finally getting some love around here. We have 12 albums in common and almost all of them I've heard. That being said, I think maybe your chart could benefit from a little variety. As big a DMB fan as I am, I don't think 7 (8 really with the Dave solo) of their albums are in the top 50. Maybe you'd like some other jam bands? The Allman Brothers Band, Gov't Mule, Pat McGee Band, The Black Crowes, etc.

Great list, I loved the comments on the album. I do think the charts needs a more variety in artists. I totally agree on the comment you gave about Magical Mystery Tour. It's often overlooked (as far that's possible for a Beatles album), while it's on of their best. I never heard of the dave matthews band or the Pretenders but I checked them out and they sound really good. I'm definitely goin to explore their music more.
