Top 100 Greatest Music Albums
by KinkyAfro

I wouldnt call this chart "best ever albums" as the site suggests, but this is quite simply my favourite albums. My chart has been put together based purely on what I enjoy listening to, no points for influence on other artists or importance at its time of release. It may be heavy with certain artists and genres, but they happen to be my favourite ones, I don't go for the one album per artist thing as I don't believe that gives an accurate account of your genuine favourites. The only rule I had was no greatest hits/best of, b-side collections or compilation albums.

I've put my favourite 3 tracks off each album on so if anyone hasn't heard anything on this chart they can listen to a taster of the album on youtube.

In the process of listening to all these again so positions will change.

Nothing original here but just a great guitar album. My first Black keys album and still my favourite from a time when the Black Keys were still a great band. Just loved it on first listen and the whole feel of this album just does it for me. Favourite tracks, Till I Get My Way, 10am Automatic, The Desperate Man. [First added to this chart: 02/01/2013]

R.E.Ms last truly great album in my opinion and with hindsight, other that seeing them live on the Monster tour, I don't think I'd be too bothered if they called it a day after this. Everything since I feel has just tarnished their reputation, (saying that, New Adventures in hi-fi has grown on me recently). Favourite tracks, Find the River, Drive, Man on the Moon. A proper band! These blokes really were the real deal. From the opening riff of Aint the One you know you're in for a treat and i dont think ill ever get bored of the guitar solo on the full length version of Freebird. Quite a recent purchase in comparison to the rest of my chart, but probably played this more than anything else over the last month. Isn't ranked higher up my chart as will wait to see how I rate it in a few months. Got it at the same time as Blonde on Blonde but I much prefer this. Favourite tracks, Like a Rolling Stone, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, Highway 61 Revisited. [First added to this chart: 02/01/2013]

Was quite narrow minded 15 years ago and wouldnt listen to anything unless it was guitar based, but my flatmate of the time used to play this all the time and it finally won me over. It opened me up to a whole new genre of music and was quickly stocking up on lots of Motown and Atlantic Soul. I know people hold this in high regard for the political issues it addressed at the time but for me its just a dreamy sounding great album to listen to. Favourite tracks, What's Going On, Inner City Blues, Mercy Mercy Me. [First added to this chart: 02/01/2013]

When you put this album on, it just gives you just feel that you are listening to a greatest hits soul compilation, its thats good! Maybe its because most of the songs are covers but he more than does them all justice, and the 3 songs on the album he wrote are all brilliant. The Black Keys showed another side with this album, starting off with acoustic opener All I Ever Wanted. Also like the fact they do 2 different versions of the same song on here with Remember When. Ill put my neck on the line here, but for me Dylan is a bit hit and miss. This though is just a songwriting masterclass, the first Dylan album I really took to. Favourite tracks, Simple Twist of Fate, Tangled up in Blue, If You See Her, Say Hello. [First added to this chart: 02/01/2013]

I've bought so many albums on the strength of hearing one song, and been disappointed so many times... but not with this. Last Nite was the song and the album lived upto my expectations. Lost them after this album as I don't think what came after it is much good. This takes me back to a pretty fun time in my life, was newly single after just coming out of a long term relationship, had sold my house, had cash to burn and was out on the town pretty much every night of the week. This and The Charlatans' Wonderland were my favourite albums at that time. Favourite tracks, Last Nite, Someday, The Modern Age. [First added to this chart: 02/01/2013]

Genius is the word that best describes Stevie Wonder. I always liked Talking Book more when I was younger but as I've got older I listen to this far more, this is his best collection on songs. Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 85.4/100, a mean average of 85.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 85.3/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 7.5.

I really love this chart and the comments even if I don't agee with all the albums on it: maybe a bit too biased on britpop: but anyhow I am tempted to check out a lot of your favorites especially the Rory gallagher ones; l checked out the Irish Tour album and I really lovend it as well. Apart from the shredding guitar plating I think it is the Ray Manzanerek like organisatie that delivers the icing on the already fantastisch cake.
I also especially liked your funny comments on Metallica and am glad you appreciate them
