Top 100 Greatest Music Albums
by KinkyAfro

I wouldnt call this chart "best ever albums" as the site suggests, but this is quite simply my favourite albums. My chart has been put together based purely on what I enjoy listening to, no points for influence on other artists or importance at its time of release. It may be heavy with certain artists and genres, but they happen to be my favourite ones, I don't go for the one album per artist thing as I don't believe that gives an accurate account of your genuine favourites. The only rule I had was no greatest hits/best of, b-side collections or compilation albums.

I've put my favourite 3 tracks off each album on so if anyone hasn't heard anything on this chart they can listen to a taster of the album on youtube.

In the process of listening to all these again so positions will change.

Can't believe this album is ranked so low on this site and can only assume that people haven't heard it. Most people associate The Charlatans with the song The Only One I Know but the music on this is a big departure from their earlier sound. A much darker sounding album than their previous releases. I didnt know what to make of it when I first heard it, I was expecting Tellin' Stories part 2 so was a bit surprised, and a little dissapointed if im honest. After a few listens though it just blew me away with how great it was. Does not get the recognition that it deserves as it is a masterpiece and stands up against any of the so called classics. Favourite tracks, The Blind Stagger, Impossible, Forever. [First added to this chart: 02/01/2013]

A lot of hate on this site for Oasis which i can understand, I personally can't stand Liam Gallagher, the bloke is a bit of a minge. However, this album came out the day I started college and it just changed everything within the Uk music scene and opened doors for other bands who wouldn't usually get airtime to get heard. This was Oasis at their best and they never repeated anything like this again. This album had songs that clicked with a generation that were still waiting for the Stone Roses to return and for me personally it came just at the right time. Favourite tracks, Live Forever, Columbia, Rock n Roll Star. [First added to this chart: 02/01/2013]

His strongest Solo album, a masterpiece, and in my opinion better than his work with the Smiths. Great lyrics and tunes and not a weak track on it. This is the high point of his career. Along with The Bluetones' debut, My soundrack album to the summer of 96, my favourite year (not for music, just in general). The year I left college and jumped on a plane to go and work in Spain, the year just seemed like one endless party! Whenever I listen to it now it just takes me back to when life seemed simple without a care in the world. Favourite Tracks, You've Got It Bad, Policemen And Pirates, The Riverboat Song. Followed on from wild wood with what is in my opinion his career masterpiece. England 95 and you could not get away from Paul Weller, the man was just everywhere. It was the height of britpop and there was loads of live music tv shows popping up and he seemed to be on all of them, either playing songs off this album or guesting with other artists. Off topic, I remember him doing a Oasis's Talk Tonight as a duet with Noel Gallagher on the White Room, well worth checking out on youtube if its on there. Also on a soppy and more personal note, had You do something to me as the first dance when I got married. note Favourite tracks, You Do Something To Me, Stanley Road, Broken Stones [First added to this chart: 02/01/2013]

I feel like I've discovered this album all over again as I didn't remember how great it was. Used to have it on tape but someone borrowed it when I was at college and I never got it back. Just never got round to replacing it when I started my CD collection until recently and it made me wonder why I didn't buy it sooner. Why did this band only make one album? They could have took the world by storm. Favourite tracks, There She Goes, I Can't Sleep, Son of a Gun. [First added to this chart: 03/18/2013]

R.E.Ms last truly great album in my opinion and with hindsight, other that seeing them live on the Monster tour, I don't think I'd be too bothered if they called it a day after this. Everything since I feel has just tarnished their reputation, (saying that, New Adventures in hi-fi has grown on me recently). Favourite tracks, Find the River, Drive, Man on the Moon. One of the mid-90's forgotten bands often catagorised as britpop also rans and only remembered for Slight Return, but this album is a real gem full of excellent tracks. Remember seeing a review in the music press when this was released and the tag line said "this is the 2nd album the Stone Roses should have made". Don't know about that, this is different to the Stone Roses and is a great album in its own right without that sort of expectation placed onto it. Been listening to this quite a bit recently and realised this is possibly my most battered and scratched CD and case due to the fact that I gave it so much of a hammering when it first came out! Favourite tracks, Time and Again, Talking to Clarry, Carnt be Trusted. [First added to this chart: 05/02/2013]

David Gray gets a lot of stick and is seen as uncool but this is a fantastic album. Never followed this up with anything of note, although his debut, A Century Ends, is worth checking out if you like this. How can an album recorded in someones living room on a shoestring budget sound so amazing! Heartfelt lyrics that struck a chord with a lot of people. Not an album if you want something uplifting to listen to! Favourite tracks, Sail Away, Babylon, This Years Love. [First added to this chart: 02/01/2013]

It took me a long time to get into this album. Bought it when it was released but other than the singles it didnt really grab me. Over time though i have listened to it a lot and has a great atmosphere to it and has aged much better than other albums released in the same era. Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 85.4/100, a mean average of 85.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 85.3/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 7.5.

I really love this chart and the comments even if I don't agee with all the albums on it: maybe a bit too biased on britpop: but anyhow I am tempted to check out a lot of your favorites especially the Rory gallagher ones; l checked out the Irish Tour album and I really lovend it as well. Apart from the shredding guitar plating I think it is the Ray Manzanerek like organisatie that delivers the icing on the already fantastisch cake.
I also especially liked your funny comments on Metallica and am glad you appreciate them
