It was hyped up a lot for me for two reasons: First, I’m a huge David Bowie fan, so there’s that, and second, everyone was talking about how great it was. So those two things combined created big expectations for me. While this is a good album, it wasn’t the amazing album I had hoped it would be. There are some very good moments on this album, but there’s also a few that just didn’t feel to special to me. One very positive thing is that Bowie doesn’t come off sounding old or sounding like he’s trying to make people remember who he was. You get that a lot with older musicians, they release an album and the music is just trying to get people to say “Oh wow, I remember them. So many memories." The music should stand on its own, and in this case it does. I need to take a quick side note here for a second: This album cover is terrible. I hate it so much. There were quotes from the guy who made it talking about how great he thought it was and how symbolic he thought it was of forgetting Bowie’s past achievements. It looks like he took the album cover to “Heroes" and did something in MS Paint that took about 30 seconds and said “Done." It’s so stupid. Anyways, that’s my little aside. The album is solid, worth listening to."  [+]  Reply

The first couple songs ar...""It pains me to rate this album so low. Not only is it a heartbreaking, deep look at loss and mourning, but it's also really beautiful. The shimmering synths sound just like the cover looks - alive and crisp. But there's just too much here, and there's not enough variety. The first couple songs are great, especially "Bright Horses." I had to stop listening after that one when I was at work for fear of breaking out in tears in the middle of the work day. The opener finds Cave in a mode that he's often in on this album, spinning abstract stories out of really specific, familiar components. Nowhere does he do this better than on the closer, "Hollywood," which is one of the 5-10 best songs he's ever written. It would be in that club even just with the first half, but the second half, and it's heartrending story where you can tell Cave is nearly in tears during his falsetto as he's both assuring us it gets better while also begging that things will get better, absolutely pushes it over the top. So yeah, it's a shame that for the most part the rest of this album is so samey. I probably like every song here, but listening to it all in a row is, frankly, a chore. There are tremendous moments that catch you off guard, like "Mama Bear holds the remote, Papa Bear just floats, and Baby Bear is gone to the moon in a boat." These moments pull you back in as you're drifting off, but the great moments like this are too spread out in minimal repetitive passages. This album is a landmark and a career highlight. But unfortunately I have no desire to hear it again."  [+]  Reply

In the realm of previous things Jack White has done, this is probably closer to a White Stripes sound than anything else. A lot of blues and folk sounds to this album and White does it very well, especially when playing guitar, I’ve always been a huge fan of his guitar playing. The music is great, and more importantly, Chance’s rapping ability is great. He has a playful youthfulness to him, but isn’t afraid to get serious. Perhaps the line that really stuck in my head most is from the second half of “Pusha Man", in which Chance raps about his hometown of the south side of Chicago: “They be shooting whether it’s dark or not, I mean the days is pretty dark a lot/Down here it’s easier to find a gun than find a fucking parking spot" and later, “Everybody dies in the summer/Wanna say your goodbyes, tell them while it’s spring". It’s really reflective, and pretty sad. But Chance takes the sadness and bad circumstances he was born into and works through them, eventually making light of them, adding a bit of levity to the situation. There’s some great guest appearances on this album, most notably the appearances of Childish Gambino and Action Bronson, both of whom do really well."  [+]  Reply
