"Once Upon A Time" - a brilliant way to start off an album that was a true game-changer.
The lyrics are phenomenal. Music is great too.
Favorite Tracks: title track, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, Like A Rolling Stone, Ballad Of A Thin Man, Tombstone Blues, Desolation Row.
"They're selling postcards of the hanging" ...

A motherlode of terrific sounding songs with Dylan's thought provoking lyrics, story-telling and imagery. To me this feels like chapters 2 and 3 of Highway 61 Revisited.

Just when some people had written off Dylan ... he puts out this album. In the singer-songwrite era, he pens this classic and blows the majority of the genre totally out of the water, The guitar playing, the melodies, the fabulous lyrics. The album had a sound all it's own.
Favorite songs: the whole darn thing.

The story telling on this album is unparalleled. The title track is legendary. Ballad Of Hollis Brown is eerie, haunting, and perfect. With God On Our Side is unlike anything lyrically before or since. The last verse is spectacular. The imagery on When The Ship Comes In is great. The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll is another absolute gem. Only A Pawn In Their Game - wow. Dylan almost had to give up folk song writing just because this album set the bar so darn high. An artist at the top of his game - a game he was writing all the new rules for. Too many absolute classic songs on here to touch upon in a brief paragraph. Few artists have ever written one or two songs anywhere near the level of the seven tracks listed below ... and this was just one album.
Favorite Tracks: Mr. Tambourine Man, Love Minus Zero/No Limit, She Belongs To Me, Maggie's Farm, Gates of Eden, It's All Over Now, Baby Blue, Subterranean Homesick Blues ..

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 2% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 89.9/100, a mean average of 90.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 90.4/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 7.7.

i really like your chart.
i took a real close look at it when i seen quadrophenia and high violet rated high in the list. these are 2 of my favourites. so i decided to read your personal comments- love them and wish there were more. i have never been a funk guy but im leaving your list with the intention of listening to sly and the family stone- these guys pop up regularily. im going to check them out. also im surprised that i didnt see more stones, your description of some girls was dead on- so i know your very familiar with their music. no big deal.
thanks for posting such a fantastic list.
