Music needed an enema after the 80s. Nirvana came and reminded everyone that rock music was about passion, angst, feedback, and amplifiers
... not a bunch of pansies whining about every damn time they stubbed their toe.
Favorite Tracks: Drain You, On A Plain, Territorial Pissings, Lithium, In Bloom

It took me awhile to pull the trigger on listening to this album because it was described in some circles as perhaps a bit too avant garde or artsy for it's own good. Well that was stupid of me. This album is that quirky friend that everyone loves BECAUSE it is quirky. The guitar work, the melodies, the lyrics, the unexpected instrumentation ... it all works together so well. This album gets addictive. [First added to this chart: 07/27/2013]

Ireland U2
A richer sound from U2 than you find in their earlier work. To me this is the most enjoyable listen of any U2 album from first groove through to the last. Lyrically interesting. Some experimentation. Is it too "pop"? Some may claim that ... at the end of the day, I don't care if it is too accessible or poppy - I enjoy listening to it. Favorite tracks include "Until The End Of The World", "Even Better Than The Real Thins", "So Cruel", "Tryin' To Throw Your Arms ..." and the more Top 40ish "Mysterious Ways", "One" and "Ultra Violet". More spit and polish production work on this one than you generally expect from an REM album - but also a handful of their best ever tracks highlighting a strong effort. [First added to this chart: 08/14/2013]

This album rips. The first five songs in particular are frenetic jams with great guitar work and ticked off lyrics. Great rock album. [First added to this chart: 06/20/2013]

This is the best, most consistent, Chili Peppers album. Flea absolutely tears it up with his bass work on this record and it makes for a great sound and great combination of rock with that funk feel to it. Favourite tracks include: "Mellowship Slinky in B Major", "Naked In The Rain", "Apache Rose Peacock", "If You Have To Ask", "The Power of Equality", "Give It Away", and the anthemic "Under The Bridge". I remember a great evening of partying on the island of Ibiza in which a patchwork quilt of people representing the nations of Europe and North America enjoyed singing along at the top of their lungs to multiple playings of "Under The Bridge" while downing a few "adult beverages" ... that is a song with appeal and emotion to it. I was reluctant to include a compilation album but this one is noteworthy in terms of the influence it had on so many artists. This collection inspired a movement away from the canned, pristine world of tin pan alley lyrics and opened the doors to explore more earthy and meaningful topics - lyrics that addressed the human condition, the human spirit and asked how music could inspire societal change. Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 2% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 89.9/100, a mean average of 90.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 90.4/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 7.7.

i really like your chart.
i took a real close look at it when i seen quadrophenia and high violet rated high in the list. these are 2 of my favourites. so i decided to read your personal comments- love them and wish there were more. i have never been a funk guy but im leaving your list with the intention of listening to sly and the family stone- these guys pop up regularily. im going to check them out. also im surprised that i didnt see more stones, your description of some girls was dead on- so i know your very familiar with their music. no big deal.
thanks for posting such a fantastic list.
