This Swedish band took a bit of a departure for their fourth album, 1998’s Gran Turismo. Prior to this disc, their sound had been lighter and easy, which took a back seat on this record. The darker and more serious sound of Gran Turismo works well, and it was a winner with their fans, selling well over 3 million copies. The vocals of Nina Persson, as always, are the focal point, and the band does a great job of tightening things up more here than they had ever done before. The album produced a pair of very nice hits in “Erase / Rewind” and “My Favourite Game”, propelling the album to the first of three consecutive Swedish number ones, with moderate success across the rest of the world. This was the band’s peak, as the next two efforts sold considerable fewer copies.
Unfortunately, The Cardigans chose to call it a day in 2006. They did regroup for a few years in the 2010’s, but they didn’t release any new material. They didn’t continue in the direction of Gran Turismo, choosing instead to release the more country rock flavored follow up Long Gone Before Daylight, which was five years after this came out. The band did themselves no favors in the way of momentum after being a most promising act earlier in their career. But Persson is always worth listening to…a truly bright voice in the world of alternative rock, and there are enough good songs on this record to make it worth listening to. The Cardigans could have, and maybe should have, had a more successful career, but I guess we’ll have to settle for what they were able to give us. [First added to this chart: 10/29/2022]
