"Hidden" Gems: Next 100 Albums, Sort Of by babyBlueSedan

Every time I update my overall chart I struggle to limit myself to 100 albums because there are so many albums that I want to mention. I've thought about putting together a "101-200" chart to make this possible, but have never had much desire to do so for a couple reasons. First, the chart would have a lot of repeat artists, and you only need to see Songs: Ohia and Bill Callahan listed a few times to know how the rest of that chart would go. Second, I keep my decade charts up to date for a reason, which is to give some points to albums that didn't quite make the cut.

So after some thought, I've decided on a kind of compromise. This is a list of 100 more great albums that are not in the top 1,000 albums on the site. I've limited it to one album per artist. These are not obscure albums by any means; some of them are very well known. I've given precedence to albums by artists who don't have any albums in the top 1,000 album. I've also (with a couple glaring exceptions) avoided albums by artists who have an album on my overall chart. A lot of these are soft rules, but the top 1,000 rule is concrete. I like this because it lets me highlight genres that are not as well represented on my overall, as well as write a little blurb about the style of the album that hopefully entices you to check it out more than just seeing it listed on a decade chart.

Albums are listed chronologically, at least by year.

(Updated a year later, and tweaked slightly to highlight hidden gems and genres that aren't represented as much on my overall chart. Much heavier on the "hidden gems" than "next 100 favorites" side of things at this point.)

This is a classic in the eyes of hip hop fans, but it's still never mentioned in the same breath as Illmatic or Ready to Die, though it should be. Some of the most creative lyricism and flows in all of hip hop, created when the genre was in its relative infancy. [First added to this chart: 06/06/2020]

Scarface is secretly a top 10 rapper of all time, and "I Seen a Man Die" is secretly a top ~25 classic hip hop song. Neither of these things should be secrets. [First added to this chart: 06/06/2020]
