This chart really has surprised me in my recent reading of it.

Every “recognised” best albums chart I have read over recent years has been highly stereotyped, most notably the all-time lists of ‘Rolling Stone’, ‘New Musical Express’ and ‘Uncut’, none of which show the understanding of highly learned writers like Piero Scaruffi or Joe S. Harrington.

This list by ‘FACT’ magazine, although about a decade old when I discovered it browsing through Rate Your Music, is refreshing by comparison. It is highly varied in genre, has few stereotypes in its choices, and the actual ‘FACT’ website provides extremely good notes with critical anecdotes for some (though not all) of the choices by actual musicians who are relatively young and likely to be more useful guides than those listed as judges by ‘Rolling Stone’.

It is true that I am familiar with very few of these albums, and had never heard of many, but that adds to the interest.
