For the most part, I agree with you, hypothetical BEA member. Pop is, generally, not even good on accident. Modern pop is the cantina from Star Wars: a wretched hive of scum and villainy; but even among the weird aliens and that one pig-nosed guy, there exists a cool, exotic, antihero who makes you not regretting entering in the first place. That's right. Lorde is Han Solo. Though there are some lackluster tracks in this album ("Tennis Courts" and "Buzzcut Season" immediately spring to mind), other tracks, like "Ribs", "White Teeth Teens", and (the albeit overplayed) "Royals" make it soar above the rest of the pop world like some kind of majestic, 21st century bird. A Millennial Falcon, if you will. Though pop is pop, this pop gives us a new, minimalist-ish sound that resonates with me, for one. For what it is, it's phenomenal."  [+]  Reply

It was hyped up a lot for me for two reasons: First, I’m a huge David Bowie fan, so there’s that, and second, everyone was talking about how great it was. So those two things combined created big expectations for me. While this is a good album, it wasn’t the amazing album I had hoped it would be. There are some very good moments on this album, but there’s also a few that just didn’t feel to special to me. One very positive thing is that Bowie doesn’t come off sounding old or sounding like he’s trying to make people remember who he was. You get that a lot with older musicians, they release an album and the music is just trying to get people to say “Oh wow, I remember them. So many memories." The music should stand on its own, and in this case it does. I need to take a quick side note here for a second: This album cover is terrible. I hate it so much. There were quotes from the guy who made it talking about how great he thought it was and how symbolic he thought it was of forgetting Bowie’s past achievements. It looks like he took the album cover to “Heroes" and did something in MS Paint that took about 30 seconds and said “Done." It’s so stupid. Anyways, that’s my little aside. The album is solid, worth listening to."  [+]  Reply

The music is great, and more importantly, Chance’s rapping ability is great. He has a playful youthfulness to him, but isn’t afraid to get serious. Perhaps the line that really stuck in my head most is from the second half of “Pusha Man", in which Chance raps about his hometown of the south side of Chicago: “They be shooting whether it’s dark or not, I mean the days is pretty dark a lot/Down here it’s easier to find a gun than find a fucking parking spot" and later, “Everybody dies in the summer/Wanna say your goodbyes, tell them while it’s spring". It’s really reflective, and pretty sad. But Chance takes the sadness and bad circumstances he was born into and works through them, eventually making light of them, adding a bit of levity to the situation. There’s some great guest appearances on this album, most notably the appearances of Childish Gambino and Action Bronson, both of whom do really well."  [+]  Reply

Backed up with my concert of the year at The Royal Festival Hall, which was even better than the performance at The Royal Albert Hall, later in 2013. This album has already won most polls and awards in the category, and has been criminally overlooked by music press, outside the genre. Some would argue that it is a tribute to King Crimson and Yes, but that would be missing everything. This is an artist at his creative peak, surrounded by the best in the business. Special mention to Marco Minnemann on drums, but to be fair the whole assemble deserve a name check. Guthrie Govan (and that guitar solo on Drive Home), Nick Beggs on Bass, Theo Travis on Flute, Sax & Clarinet, and Adam Holzman on Keys. All brilliant, and all easy to pick out in the amazing production of Alan Parsons and Steven Wilson himself. I can’t rate this album high enough. It’s just brilliant."  [+]  Reply
