I pretty much feel the same way about Fountains Of Wayne, only understanding and appreciating recently how much they actually mean to me. Since “Radiation Vibe” through to ‘Utopia Parkway’, which has always been a permanent fixture on my all time albums list, and onto this one and beyond , FOW quite simply have been a regular joyful fixture in my world Lyrically I believe this is their best album and look no further than these pearlers “ He was killed by a cellular phone explosion They scattered his ashes across the ocean The water was used to make baby lotion The wheels of promotion, were set into motion” (MEXICAN WINE) And “ Now I see your face in the strangest places Movies and magazines I saw you talking to Christopher Walken On my TV screen” (HACKENSACK) And of course the double / triple on tondre of “All Kinds Of Time” ( combining a football game with sexual tension is pure genius) And the sheer variety of musical styles offered up here is really impressive. You’ve got Power Pop (“Bright Future In Sales”, “Stacy’s Mom”, “Little Red Light”, Bought For A Song”), beautiful ballads (“Hackensack”,”Valley Winter Song”), Country and Western (“Hung Up On You”), Pop (“Hey Julie”) and Brit Pop where they manage to out-Oasis Oasis with the Oasis-esque “Elevator Up” Vale Adam Schlesinger 1967 - 2020"  [+]  Reply

Literary alt-rock with a unique lyrical P.O.V. (vs all the other alt-rock out there) with songs like "here I dreamt I was an architect" (an architect who "built this balustrade / To keep you home, to keep you safe / From the outside world"), "july! July!" ("i say your uncle was a crooked french canadian / and he was gut-shot runnin gin ") and its propulsion towards the strange, and "grace cathedral hill" and its lackluster new year's ("Some way to greet the year: / your eyes all bright and brimmed with tears. / The pilgrims, pills and tourists here all sing / "Fifty-three bucks to buy a brand new halo." "). There's a variety of instrumentation backing colin's off-kilter, off-cove vocals. The other songs are pretty good...and dark, like "leslie anne levine", a dead child who sings "my name is Leslie Anne Levine / my mother birthed me down a dry ravine / my mother birthed me far too soon / born at nine and dead at noon", or like "a cautionary tale" about a mom who whores to feed her kid ("the next time she tries to feed you collard greens, remember what she does when you're asleep"). "cocoon" overstays its welcome, but it's the only one. 10 minute closer "california one / youth and beauty brigade" ("We're calling all bed wetters and ambulance chasers / Poor pick-pockets, bring 'em in / Come join the youth and beauty brigade") never dulls and hints at epic numbers to come. A lady pilot claims "Stars can't fight city lights / They've turned their backs on us " and "All the lonely houses stand like monuments To thieves " and "If I meet you in the night / You're free to covet all you like " in "tightly". (Advice: take her up on it!) Later she seduces "When you've lived it up till it's got you down...Look for me, I'll be around (Advice: take her up on it!) "pretty girls" and "runnin' out of fools" are the highlights. Lovers abound for "pretty girls" with "curves so comely and sinister". Her cover of "runnin' out of fools" is heart-tugging and somewhat sad at the ending refrain. (in a good way)"  [+]  Reply
