Unlike it's predecessor, the wild and the innocent, feels much more like a band album rather than a solo record. It contains at least two Springsteen classics in the beautiful, Sandy, and the thrilling, rosalita, both brilliant. Other standouts are the funky title track, and the jazzy, kitty's back, which could be extended to around 20 minutes in it's live incarnation. Wild Billy's circus story, is about as close as the record gets to the Asbury park album. Incident on 57th street, is another strong track, and the LP closes with the often underrated and overlooked epic, New York serenade. It's a fantastic album and probably the closest Bruce got to bringing the new Jersey atmosphere and all it's character's to life. Wonderful. "  [+]  Reply

As others have noted, this is far more similar to other early 70s glam rock than Eno's later ambient work. As someone who far prefers glam rock to ambient music, that's fine with me. In fact, I prefer this album to any of Roxy Music's work. I quite like Eno's voice, even though he himself didn't seem to be a big fan. The high points on this album are simply stunning, with On Some Faraway Beach and Some of Them Are Old standing out as exceptionally beautiful tracks (OSFB could almost bring me to tears). Needles in the Camel's Eye is a top-tier glam rocker (used to great effect at the beginning of Velvet Goldmine - a movie I'd recommend to any glam rock fans), while Baby's on Fire has one of the most intricately explosive solos (courtesy of King Crimson's Robert Fripp) I've ever heard. It all wraps up in one of Eno's earlier ambient experiments, the wonderful title track, which I can honestly just zone out and listen to on repeat and be perfectly content. While it's not a perfect album, each track has something new to discover on repeat listens. Highly recommended to fans of glam rock, as well as anyone looking for an album of pop songs crafted by one music's most creative minds. "  [+]  Reply

"I may be in the minority here, but I will not hesitate to state that I believe that Berlin is Reed’s masterpiece. The o...""I may be in the minority here, but I will not hesitate to state that I believe that Berlin is Reed’s masterpiece. I like Transformer, in fact, Transformer is much easier to dip into when you don’t feel like listening to a full album, but as a whole, Berlin is worlds better than Transformer. The opening track ‘Berlin’ is a beautiful song and, in my mind, a perfect opener. Next we have ‘Lady Day’, a fine track that works very well as an in-between before the next brilliant song, the same goes for the next track ‘Men of Good Fortune’ which is possibly the weakest track, but that is saying something, as the song is actually still very good. Then we have the albums next classic, ‘Caroline Says I’ which, as with all Lou Reed/Velvet Underground tracks with ‘says’ in the title, is absolutely brilliant. Then we have two more songs that further the story of the album ‘How it Feels’ and ‘Oh, Jim’, both great, before my favourite track. ‘Caroline Says II’ which I love so much I’m going to write a paragraph about it. ‘Caroline Says II’ is a slightly reworked version of an (at that point) unreleased Velvet Underground song called ‘Stephanie Says’. ‘Stephanie Says’ is a beautiful song and is, in my opinion, one of the Velvet’s best, so Reed takes this almost perfect song and polishes it up, making it part of something much bigger, this is really an amazing effort. The next two tracks ‘The Kids’ and ‘The Bed’ are dark, depressing and effective, leading up to the finale, ‘Sad Song’ which is a lovely melancholic closer. Overall, this album is Lou’s best, and is a must listen for any Velvet Underground fan, any Lou Reed fan and, really, any music fan. "  [+]  Reply

The former can work with a song or two, but the latter really makes Little Earthquakes "smoother", and really immerses you into her world. As for the music itself, the music is extremely minimalistic, which makes a big difference on the experience. One of the problems I had with The Hounds of Love was how "pompous" it was. This is the exact opposite. On a side note, "Precious Things" is the best song on this album. Look up the live version on Youtube, and you shall be amazed."  [+]  Reply
