Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)
This chart is rated in the top 6% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 88.6/100, a mean average of 86.4/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 88.9/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 17.2.

very Scaruffi like
a cool chart if you are a 60s-90s lover
Wow what an interesting list. Lots of great avant garde stuff on here. Trout Mask as #1 is certainly a statement haha.
@ Domme
Thank you and glad you love Lorca and got that vinyl!
One thing to think with is that, especially 9s and above, how singular each work is means youre not going to get what you get out of Lorca (except maybe partially or fleetingly with some works) with really anything else, so with another 9 like TI (or any others) it is important to really separate one's expectations from that and to find out what TI is doing that is so remarkable, emotional, and so on (or determine for yourself that it isnt; but first, outside of direct correlations - Chrome for instance - separating oneself from incongruous expectations can be important prereq to finding out what IS there first).
What I meant by "not surprised" was that TI would probably be the last, or among the last, albums I would recommend to you from my chart, based on yours.
I also did not mean that it wasn't infact enjoyable, just not in a 'pure entertainment' sense (almost as far from that as possible), but certainly enjoyable in the sense that there are levels of enjoyment that one might consider above that and more desirable than its milder or casual forms -- more impacting, more significant, more compelling, profound, awe-inspiring, than 'simple or pure enjoyment/entertainment'.
For the 228th time, your descriptions are something to B-hold. Yet it isn't working for me this time. Idk wydm 'no surprises'?. I only see the album as super-annoying apocalyptic chaos, not anything more. Simultaneously, for me it HAS to have some sort of enjoyability to work proper. The 90s answer to Trout Mask Replica? Not even a remotely decent chance [Beefheart has genius humor, unbelievable vocal range and exceptional talent]. The different experiences between other experimental/dangerous/hypnotic/brutally dark bodies of work, and Twin Infinitives is that I don't get inspiration nor chills down my spine with the latter (whether'd be chills of terror, depression, existentialism, anger etc).
Not sure how much longer talking about Royal Trux's "expressive non-annoyance, unique tension" can hold my interest though. ;-)
Too many more listens is doing my convenience injustice lol.
My theory is good drugs help make good music, bad drugs help make bad music.......okay maybe that was rude (and kiiind of untrue), but we ain't gonna love every single experimental/good/enjoyable album that crosses our paths.
All aside, out of those musicians you unconsciously inspired me to check out/revisit (such as Tim, Beefheart, Wyatt, early PF, RHP debut, Type O, Suicide), Tim Buckley, hands down, has been the most impactful and overwhelming of them all. His amazing music has redefined a lot of what I think of psychedelic music and folktunes, alongside otherwordly singing. Thank you .Fun fact: I wrote this a few hours after I got delivered an original 1970 pressing of Lorca. What a timing. I can die happy xD
@ Domme
Thanks :)
No worries, no surprise with Twin Infinitives. It is basically an apocalyptic chaos of carnage, excessive drug trips, disorientation, death, hysteria, expressionist fears, etc. It deconstructs and deforms 'rock n' roll' (such as Exile-era Rolling Stones) to the point where this becomes extremely twisted and almost unrecognizable and their "dirty rock" (butchered further by the inclinations of artists like Chrome, Pere Ubu, Beefheart's 'cubism', Faust...) has reached an epic and maniacal breaking point where all hope has been lost and the protagonist's are lying in the gutter, beaten, mauled, drugged, crawling and on the verge of death, but still carrying on in an unrelenting tension of survival. And while I'd never call it "pleasant" or "enjoyable" in the purest sense, the tension throughout is incredible and it is an utterly audacious, fearless, captivating and astonishing experience, an overwhelming monolith of dilapidated expressionist scenes, all the more amazing as one realizes the intentional causation behind it (not just "randomly assembled or played"). Basically, the 90s answer to Trout Mask Replica. A synthesis and climax of the wasted, most painful excesses of the darkest trials of the 80s, while already capping off and assimilating what the worst fears of the 90s would become.
This is by any fronts the chart (of those w/o descriptions) I revisit the most. iThink uKnow y.
Also it's so strange for me to see Lorca (that I'd put in my top 10 greatest albums) next to Twin Infinitives (that I'd put in my top 10 worst).
@ Jameth
Not "complete disregard", just don't know of any that are truly among the greatest albums of all time. I have no interest in selecting an album per country (or similar system) or even "best ofs, around the world" just to be democratic. The inclusions here are by qualitative rating alone, no other factors. If you have any you would rec, maybe double check they are not already on my much more extensive versions of this (Greatest Albums and/or Greatest Classical) in the music diaries forum, and feel free to send them my way (might help to read "My Criteria" page if you haven't and you really want to know where I'm coming from on these -- again, in Music Diaries forum).
Beethoven's 9th tops my Classical list, and would also top this one if it included Classical (and the whole list would probably be 2/3rds Classical). But it's just Rock/Jazz (and all offshoots, including some avant-garde that isn't too Classical). Of course, having Meredith Monk and Diamanda Galas, and perhaps some others, can really confuse things, as it is kinda questionable they should be on this one.
It should not be particularly surprising if a majority of the greatest Rock/Jazz are USA-centric (especially through the 60s) while most of the greatest Classical are European-centric. These tend to merge a bit more as progressive rock and its subgenres came to fruition, and the imbalance shifts a bit...
Volunteers is actually on there at #67. Overall, this chart is not quite updated though. Some selections have actually them dropped below #100 and others rose on my more recent version (again, in music diaries).
I’ve got beef with this list:
1. There’s a complete disregard for regional folk or international releases. It’s entirely Anglo-centric with a dash of Germany.
2. Volunteers looks like it got lost here.
3. Where is Beethoven? : P
