Top 100 Music Albums of the 1970s by Tamthebam

This is my favourite decade my chart is dominated by Bowie, Elton John & Stevie Wonder but hey its the 70's. Electric Warrior was the first album I ever owned, so it has a special meaning for me, I still have the original vinyl copies of 50% of these albums. I have included some iconic "Best Of" albums that are regarded very highly, I love all types of music and I loved exploring music recommended by others, I discovered Soul and Country-Rock during this decade.

A great Stevie Wonder album contains Smile Please, Boogie On Reggae Woman, Creepin', It Ain't No Use, Please Don't Go and the fantastic You Haven't Done Nothin' which was a dig at Richard Nixon. I prefer this album to Talking Book but not as much as Music Of My Mind [First added to this chart: 08/25/2013]

A great album, not as highly regarded as a lot of his 70's albums but it it is for me one of the best albums he ever made. The Bitch Is Back is a great opener followed by the beautiful track Pinky it also contains the original and best version of Don't Let The Sun..... and an amazing closing track "Ticking". This is regarded as Joni's 2nd best album. It is all that & more it is hard for me to separate this and my favourite Joni album Hejira. Court & Spark is therefore also my 2nd best Joni album. It is full of great songs the first 3 tracks being an example of Joni at her best. Overall the album has a jazzy feel to it which she would further explore in her next 3 albums before releasing Mingus a full jazz album. [First added to this chart: 08/25/2013]

A great Neil Young album 3rd best to Gold Rush and Harvest , Ambulance Blues, Vampire Blues, Walk On See the Sky About To Rain are amazing tracks but the title track On The Beach is the best track here. The only slightly low point is For The Turnstiles but this album should be rated much Higher than Harvest or Rust. [First added to this chart: 12/15/2013]

This was the last really good T.Rex album, the 3 that followed this felt as though Marc Bolan was treading water. A slightly more soulful approach here (Gloria Jones influence). Best tracks are Venus Loon, Teenage Dream, Nameless Wildness & Liquid Gang. [First added to this chart: 02/27/2016]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 7% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 88.3/100, a mean average of 89.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 89.0/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 7.9.

We both have the 70's as our favourite decade and the number of exceptional albums to choose from is simply outrageous. That said, we have 25 albums in common ~ interestingly your #100: Dylan's Blood On The Tracks is my #1 ~ and that, better than anything, explains where our personal musical journey takes a different route. I was surprised to see some classic, in my mind, 70's UK artists missing ~ Jethro Tull, Cat Stevens, The Who, The Clash (to name but a few). Overall a nice chart that I enjoyed wandering through.

Nice list, I like that you put “Heroes” above all other Bowie albums. That one seems to get a lot of hate lately.

This is a phenomenal list. Almost every album is deep on substance. Then there are some that are just great to listen to. Their substance comes from just how damn great they sound and make you feel (Rumours for example). Awesome.
