No one has owned a decade like Bowie did in the 1970's, not the Beatles or Dylan in the 60's or The Smiths in the 80's, Bowie released 11 studio albums and with the possible exception of Pin Ups they were all at the least very good, with 5 or 6 of those being incredible and pretty much era defining. He also had the time to work with Lou Reed on Transformer and Iggy Pop on Raw Power which were both particular milestones in their careers.
Like many of his contempories, the 80's may have brought commercial success but apart from Scary Monsters, there is very little that could compare with his output from the previous decade. There were a number of decent releases throughout the following two decades such as Outside and Heathen, but the final two albums The Next Day and Blackstar are both excellent and were something of a return to form after a long absence but as we all now know this was unfortunately cut short but his passing had already been meticulously planned. Comments:
Pink Floyd are one of the big boys, along with the Beatles and Led Zeppelin, they have created some monumental albums. The seven year period between 1973 and 1979 gave birth to The Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall.
The group has had three main line ups, the first one with Syd Barrett as the main songwriter/vocalist/guitarist, then when he was replaced by David Gilmour, and this became their most successful period and finally as a three piece when Roger Waters left.
The Syd period is brilliant and was what first got me into Pink Floyd, and at the time I much preferred this to 25 minute long songs with endless guitar solos, here we had almost perfect punk pop songs of under 3 minutes, the songs were dazzling - Arnold Layne, Astronomy Domine, See Emily Play, Apples And Oranges, Lucifer Sam, Bike, the list goes on and one wonders how things would have panned out had Syd Barrett overcome his well documented problems.
When Syd was effectively kicked out of the band, the future did not immediately seem too promising, it wasn't until Meddle was released in 1971 that a certain spark had been discovered and Echoes was unleashed on the world.
No matter what kind of music you are into, it is hard to resist the Floyd from '73 to '79 when they were arguably at their peak, there is very little between the first two albums in terms of quality, and both The Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish You Were Here still both house the ghost of Syd. Animals and The Wall are possibly more cynical and angry and show a shift in the band where Roger Waters moves from main songwriter and bass player to complete front man, taking the vocals on almost everything, this would culminate in the Final Cut, a good album, but really a Roger Waters solo album and not nearly as good as The Wall.
The final few albums without Roger Waters are quite hit and miss, A Momentary Lapse Of Reason I have never particularly liked although even then there is the odd good track such as Learning To Fly and Sorrow, the Division Bell was very successful commercially and was a much better album than its predecessor but it certainly lacks the lyrical genius of Roger Waters and isn't quite as good as I had remembered it. The final album Endless River I have not heard in its entirety as it is all instrumental apart from one track so it doesn't appeal to me. [First added to this chart: 02/03/2016]
