Top 100 Music Albums of 2017 by babyBlueSedan

Alright, 2017. As always, here are the rules for my post-2013 year charts:

1. Everything I listen to this year will be added here, regardless of whether it's amazing or awful. If I listen to over 100 albums I'll throw out some albums I didn't have much of an opinion on (not necessarily the lowest rated ones).

2. Every album will have a comment. Comments early in the year will be longer and well thought out, and as the year goes on they'll get lazier and some of them will just say "good". It's inevitable.

3. Anything with a final rating of 70 or higher will be added to my collection. I'll list the number of "keepers" in this description. Anything with a 65 comes recommended but in the end was too inconsistent or bland for me. 60s are meh and anything under that I wouldn't really recommend.

33 keepers so far this year.

I got really into Jeffrey right before this came out, so I might be overrating it slightly. But it's really really good. I love how he can adapt to pretty much any flow he wants. If he started rapping about a wider range of lyrical themes he'd become one of my favorites.

I was pretty excited for this even though I felt I shouldn't be, given the time between albums. But don't worry, the new one is up to their standards. Tonite and How do You Sleep? could become classic LCD songs, and I think this is their most consistent album yet. Unfortunately it lacks any truly incredible songs, which makes it my least favorite of their last three. Still great though.

So this is getting sold as a bold political statement, or at least it's clear while listening to it that that's what Joey intended it to be. And as a political statement, I think it kind of fails. There are a few really memorable pieces ("still got the last names of our slave owners") that are mixed in with a bunch of politics by the numbers. A lot of "we need to be nice to each other" and "guns shoot but they don't protect". And there's a "if you're not afraid say fuck Donald Trump" like a full year after YG released FDT. So yeah, it doesn't quite live up to those expectations.

But this is still DEFINITELY a very fun and entertaining album. The beats are fantastic, and some of them are really smooth, jazzy, and soulful. It's a fun album to just chill to and sing along with, and it's nice to know that you're singing along to something that has meaning. Which sounds like something a "le wrong generation" person would say, but hey, it's more satisfying to hear lyrics like this than standard pop lyrics.

One of the problems with only updating this chart less frequently than King Gizzard releases albums is that I have to write about albums I haven't heard for a while. This one is really good but pretty short at only eight songs long, so we'll see how much staying power it has.

I already wrote a comment on this album's page so why do extra work:

I was skeptical of this one after a couple listens, but it's growing on me now. While I'm not a fan of the production, which feels incredibly flat, the songwriting is as good as ever and there are some neat ideas here. It's nice to hear the band go for a sound they haven't heard before, even though part of me wishes they had stayed with the ...Like Clockwork sound for at least one more album. But onward and upwards I guess.

While none of these songs will end up being a favorite from the band, Feet Don't Fail Me, Fortress, and Villains of Circumstance are all great. The only song I'm really not a fan of is Domesticated Animals, which suffers most from the crunchy guitar sounds. Though in the end I'm only ragging on the production because their last few albums sounded so deep and clean.

In the end this is the only QOTSA album I'm given less than an 80, but I still like it a lot.

Alright, so it's not Relationship of Command. Very few albums are. Speaking of cliches about reunion albums: one of the backhanded compliments thrown at bands releasing their first album in a while is "it's about as good as we could have expected". Which in this case is a bit silly; the members of At the Drive-In haven't exactly been dormant the last 15 years. Omar released like 15 albums last year. And also, as much as I like Jim Ward, I don't think the departure of a second guitarist/backing vocalist who went on to make generic post hardcore albums really could have affected this albums quality much.

The album gets off to a slow start, as No Wolf Like the Present feels a little herky jerky and the chorus isn't great. Arcarsenal this isn't. But soon after that the album picks up. Cedric's voice has lost a little, but the surrealist / absurdist lyrics are still there. The best thing about his lyrical style is that, unless it ventures into self-parody, it doesn't feel stale even if he's not dropping gems like Invalid Litter Dept. Governed by Contagions reveals itself to be the standout, like I expected because it's fucking great, but there are other great songs like Call Broken Arrow and Ghost-Tape No 9.

All in all, it's a good album. I think it's worth listening to.

I love the title track but it's all quality. I love his voice/flow and the imagery on some of these songs, like the one about him selling drugs to his uncle. Also it's pretty short, which is good because any longer and it would have overstayed its welcome.

Good Boris album that mixes a lot of sludgier stuff with dronier stuff. Not a great album though - it's not really memorable in the way that their early 2000s stuff is

I love both these artists and like the last 4/5 albums they've released individually. This, though, feels inessential. The buzz words for reviews on this have been "chemistry" and "they wanted to record together", which seriously good for them. This is an enjoyable record, but it's clearly not new ground and is just two friends having fun. Which makes for a good listen but not something I want to listen to instead of Waking on a Pretty Daze or Sometimes I Sit.
