From Compton to Congress, set trippin’ all around
Ain't nothin' new, but a flu of new Demo-Crips and Re-Blood-licans
Red state versus a blue state, which one you governin'?
They give us guns and drugs, call us thugs
Make it they promise to fuck with you
No condom, they fuck with you, Obama say, "What it do?"

I was born in '94 so my experience is somewhat limited but I've never experienced a release quite like this one. In terms of popularity and social context, I can't name many more important but also thoroughly enjoyable and brilliantly crafted pieces of art out there that keep your attention and dig deeper every single time they are experienced. It almost feels like a musical the way it plays out, telling a deeply personal yet universally poignant narrative. This album checks all the boxes-- as timely as they come and as close to infinitely listenable as an album can get.

Now how I remember you
How I would push my fingers through
Your mouth to make those muscles move
That made your voice so smooth and sweet

A record with so much unique power and personality. Mangum's voice here is tremendously hopeful and painful. This is an album that could have a million interpretations and it seems that with each listen, depending on what I'm going through, the music caters to the opposite feeling and always reels me back into the earth. Perfect.

Ahh, the mountains are crumbling
Ahh, the canyons are thundering
All the people are fucking
They're just a pile of writhing, selfish bliss
I know I'll never die
I scream up at the sky
"You have arrived."

Never have I been more scared by an album. A true nightmare conducted brilliantly, The Seer condemns humanity and thrusts the listener into a hellscape on Earth, where they are surrounded by the thunderous booms of the end days. Who knew the apocalypse could sound this good?

If he's a serial killer, then what's the worst
That can happen to a girl who's already hurt?
I'm already hurt

I knew of Lana for years, enjoyed her older records because her vibe and lyrics hit me in a way not many other artists ever have. Then this album came out, I saw the name and wondered if it would be more like the past few releases-- a bit uninspired and kind of relying on the same old techniques that weren't developing as I had hoped they would. I didn't even listen to it until a few months after it had come out, then I did on a solo drive and wow. I don't think I've fallen so hard for an album in a long time. The musical choices here are perfect: the use of her vocals matches the toned-down instrumentals so well and I haven't resonated with lyrics like this in a long long time. Every listen feels like the first time again. Truly, a fully-realized, remarkable project.

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 1% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 92.0/100, a mean average of 93.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 94.8/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 6.6.

Love to see your personality shine through. Nice that Dylan just slip into your chart with an early 60's album that is exceptional but largely overlooked. Also nice to see Australia represented via Angus Stone - very cool!

Gorgeous chart with lovely descriptions, can't believe I'm only coming across it now! Lots of familiar picks, but arranged in a way that makes it clear you have a unique relationship to them.

Nice stuff on here.
I still need to get into Kendrick Lamar and Deerhunter. I see them on almost every list I check out.

Thanks for this list. Peace and Love

Really appreciate this chart and I think it is excellent! Weird that you have Antlers Burst Apart on here because while I was looking at this a song of theirs from the album was stuck in my head. Also a Perfume Genius song haha. Checked this out because of your comment on the new Perfume Genius and you already have it on your top hundred, that's really cool, it is very good.
