"An excellent metal album which I have gotten into more with repeated listens. 'Holy Diver' and 'Don't Talk to Strangers' are awesome metal tracks, in fact the latter is one of my all time favourite metal tracks. A very underrated metal classic."  Reply

Respectable Street is a classic with a timeless English subject matter. Other great tracks follow including Generals & Majors, Love at first sight, Towers of London, the brilliant Burning with Optimism's Flame and the catchy pop of Sgt Rock. "  [+]  Reply

"I listen to this one on vinyl all the time since my uncle gave me an original copy along with Purple Rain. Some of the songs sound a bit too similar and are either way too short, or go on too long. But I still have to say that Mountains & Sometimes it Snows In April are among his greatest musical achievements. Sometimes In Snows In April carries a deeper emotional weight for me, and I'm sure for others, concerning Prince died in April, and the song is about the concept character, Tracy, dying. I find myself skipping much of the album to get to those songs, along with Kiss. It's not because the rest of the songs are bad by any means, but those three are so classic they kind of overshadow everything else. This, along with Around The World In A day are his trippiest albums; but there is still plenty of funk and pop to go around."  [+]  Reply

But still, I don’t really get why this one is so low; it’s certainly not more feminine than her last two albums. The reason for the albums that followed to be liked by people on this site seems clear, since people here seem to have an indie fetish, and Kate apparently became more and more independent in the course of the ‘80s. I feel like this album is a bit in the middle of that process, which is why I like it so much: the production isn’t as sparse as on the following two albums and the vocals aren’t as clean as on the preceding two albums. This is Kate Bush at her weirdest and at her Kate Bush-est."  [+]  Reply

Having turned 30, she delivered her most rounded mature album to date. She acknowledged her irish heritage, taking inspiration both from the Celtic instrumentation, and, at least in the case of the title track, from James Joyce's most sensual of characters, Molly Bloom. There is a broader folk influence too, which is partly down to Bush's brother Paddy, a fan of ethnic music. It is he who introduced her to The Trio Bulgarka, traditional Bulgarian singers who appear throughout the album. Michael Nyman arranges strings on "Reaching Out"; Nigel Kennedy appears on "The Fog" and "Heads We're Dancing"; Dave Gilmour plays on "Love And Anger" and "Rocket's Tail". Even her father, credited as Dr. Bush, contributes spoken word dialog to "The Fog", a song nominally about a parent teaching their child to swim -symbolism that is not hard to decipher. (An aditional track, "Walk Straight Down The Middle", featured on the cd). Although champions of her teenage spectral keening might have wished she had remained forever young, Kate breaks new ground, welcoming an era where global influences are paired with computerized proficiency. There is a distinct quality of womanly sexuality to The Sensual World too, as well as an attempt to address outside of her Kentish back yard. Whereas once she sounded as if she was happiest playing organ in the barn behind her parents' house, here she sings as a fully accomplished recording artist ready for international success.
