Over years of weekly listening, I've found that once you move past Beck's own story about the creation of this album, it has many pieces that are applicable to thew struggle of Depression day in and day out. Musically, this record is top notch: Nigel Godrich's production really brought out some great ideas from Beck, his father, and the band. From the Shepard Scale in "Lonesome Tears" and intricate guitar weave on "Already Dead" to the lush swell on "Little One", this is an album that demands repeated listening to understand the scope of thought that went into each piece and how they fit into the overall scheme of the album. The synth textures and space noises on "Golden Age" can sound like a car accelerating off into the night and the deadpan vocals are forlorn and depleted just like the narrator would be in that situation. There's an aching honesty that permeates the record until you feel swallowed up into the dark atmosphere. Maybe that is why I think "Little One" is so effectively placed. No matter the listener, start with "Golden Age", it's Beck's greatest song."  [+]  Reply

"Yeah this album was inescapable sometime around '06-'07, and it's not hard to see why. In a time when so many bands were taking the previously more direct routes of emotive popish-y-punk songs, this album was so self-consciously grandstanding and BOMBASTIC (do you want me to repeat that last word...""Yeah this album was inescapable sometime around '06-'07, and it's not hard to see why. In a time when so many bands were taking the previously more direct routes of emotive popish-y-punk songs, this album was so self-consciously grandstanding and BOMBASTIC (do you want me to repeat that last word) that it had the air of something new and important. It wasn't at all- it had the substance and danger of a Hot Topic halloween party with dime-store shrooms. So what actually made the shoulda-been-a-trainwreck it worthwhile? Well... it was actually a lot of fun. Reviving the grand 'ol concept album formula, glam-rock poses and arena-metal that probably shoulda died with the early 80s, it apes every Big Fucking Band of the era- Iron Maiden, Supertramp, T. Rex, Danzig/Misfits, and hell there's even the Tom Waits bastard stepson of "Mama" (yes, that's Liza Minelli singing backup) but none so more than the undisputed kings of extravagant excess and Everything's Gotta Be An Anthem skin of Queen. The opener The End basically seems like the begginings of Ziggy Stardust and The Wall ran into each other, become one unholy monster walking away with blurred vision and a bloody nose. There's no way this album should've worked, but miraculously it did. Mainly cause it does mix solid songwriting with a sorta adorable sense of over-the-top surface grandeur that makes it a really entertaining spectacle, if rarely a substantive one. Not as strange or groundbreaking as it wanted to be, it nonetheless came across as a strong new millenium arena-rock album in spite of it's conspicious flaws. I may never enjoy it as much as I did when... I WAS..... A YOUNG BOYYYYYY!!!, but it's still fun to come back to once and again. "  [+]  Reply

Gasoline Dreams is one of Outkast's hardest tracks they've ever produced. Humble Mumble could have been a hit single on Sir Lucious Left Foot. Sure, there is a little filler, and the comedy skits aren't the funniest, but since when are skits on rap albums ever funny? EP - which is a masterpiece in its self and which could have been released as a double album I also now love Rush of blood ..... But I am still not keen on XY and parachutes and I really really really can't stand anything post viva la vida ! So trust me when I say I am not trying to sell Coldplay to you , but do give this album a go ! "i want to like this but after the first couple of songs it just seems like the band are repeating themselves and are too afraid to go out of their comfort zone. Crystalised is a great song but I'm struggling to connect with the rest of the album."  Reply
