I'm sure that this is an unexpected first choice, because almost no one has actually listened to it. It's a lo-fi, indie masterpiece. Ben Gibbard's lyrics tell one of the most interesting stories of a relationship that I've ever heard. Some expected things happen, but a lot of (mostly terrible) unexpected things happen. There is self discovery and the kind of turmoil that feels so real, and... you know what? I can't say a lot about how important this album has become to me. It's so flawlessly endearing that any mistakes or slipups that are here, which there aren't, are too minuscule for me to believe that this is anything short of my favorite album of all time. Every time I come back to it, I think "What if this lets me down this time? What if I hear it, and it just doesn't sound the same? What if I'm just faking how feel about this album?" In that sense, I have a very real relationship with this album that I trust as such, and I never want it fail. And you know what? It never has. I can come back to We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes any time, and I am never EVER disappointed.

Mark Kozelek's perfect blend of lively songwriting, and concept lyricism, Ghosts of the Great Highway stands as one of the most poignant albums of the last fifteen years, and one of the truest folk albums of the modern era.

An exploration of folk music, an exploration of Illinois, and an exploration of self. Sufjan Stevens has crafted an epic unlike anything I've heard. For whatever reason, I fell in love with this immediately, and I've been hooked ever since. I love this. It's the epitome of indie folk, and an excellent tribute to a fine state.

Yoshimi feels like a space opera that, if a film, would be a B-movie produced in the mid 70s. It's an expansive, eclectic collection that amounts to a tragic love story that never feels out of place for The Flaming Lips, but doesn't lack any emotional payoff.

This was an album that I had heard referenced on a reviewing site called Velocities in Music. They originally reviewed the album favorably, but had come up on it, heavily praising it whenever referencing it. Never once have I gotten a better recommendation from that site. I come back to this album, which has since shaped glow-fi music in a low-key way. There's not a song on this album that I at least don't like, even though it's only eight tracks. The best tracks only get better to me, and I'll be listening to this for a long, long time.

I stayed away from this album for a while, and fell out of love with it. After listening to it again (what is now) recently, not only do I realize why I love this record so much, but I actually adore it more than ever. Amazing album that works as nostalgia fodder, and a terrific teenage coming-of-age record.

There is this sound that The National has, but Alligator is where they really find it, really do a lot with it, and put out an album of song after song that shows just what The National can do. They're flexing their muscles and really fleshing out what they do best.

Something is always happening during Turn on the Bright Lights. It's busy, but not quite overwhelming. This is always either rocking the hell out in a drunken stupor, or scheming in the most diabolical way possible. Paul Banks sounds wicked as they come, Carlos D's bass moves the record along, and everyone else provides the potently grim atmosphere. Few debuts are this confident and accomplished. Nay, few albums are this confident and accomplished.

What might've been is unimportant when one considers that Give Up inspires someone to want more. The Postal Service is unlike any electronic project. There's an accessibility to it, but the glitches and bleeps and bloops, as well as Ben Gibbard's somber lyrics, there's also a coldness. Maybe it's because I discovered this in December of '09, but this makes a great winter album if there ever was one. Either way, one solid release from one of the most adored indie projects of all time.

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 1% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 92.8/100, a mean average of 93.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 93.3/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 7.6.

Mostly classics, in a very cool order though, going against the grain a little with your top 10 (we have the facts is easily top 3 Death Cab records, glad you love it like I do)

This feels like the most objective list I have ever seen that still deviates from the overall chart. Even if I'm not in love with all of these albums, I have to admit that I find almost all of them impressive. Your notes are the best part, though. Simple and relatable, written like a true music lover. I also used to do homework to "Wish You Were Here" when I was younger, then fall asleep to it hoping it would influence my dreams. I agree, it never gets old each time one comes back!

We Have The Facts And We're Voting Yes is very underrated on this site. Plans and Transatlanticism are very good but WHTFAWVY is just as good if not better. It might be due to the fact that the album came out before Death Cab For Cutie was on every critic's radar. A lot of other very good choices in the chart.

Hey, thanks for the kind comment!
Charts like these are the best part of this site - lots of albums I've never heard of, but your write-ups make me want to give all of them a listen.

I think music can be about serious lyrics. If music is music, then it can be anything. The albums I enjoy--whether it's because I'm used to a certain way of listening to an album, or because these really are transcendent in one way or another--are the ones I like. That's all I care about. If you disagree wit that, I totally get it. Lyrics are often important. Clearly, they're not the only important thing, but they can elevate a record, as I believe they do with these records.
