Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by CharlieBarley

Welcome one, welcome all. These are some of my favourite albums of all time. Each album means something to me, even the relatively new ones. Just over half of them I discovered in the period of the early 1990s when I was aged 15-20, although not all of those albums are 90's albums. That was when I got into music in a big way, as many teenagers do. Then current music and many classic albums. And my personal discovery of music is ongoing. For me, music is a form of connection with something greater, of solace, of self-expression and a way of channelling feelings. There are many memories here. And new ones are still being created. I have tried to make this chart represent periods from many different stages in my life also. It is subject to change as I remember other albums I like or as I discover new, or even older albums. Enjoy!

This came out in 1990, a good year for music. I always liked Depeche Mode. I played their live album, 101, to death. But when this came out it made them massive. Raw, emotional, powerful. [First added to this chart: 08/06/2016]

This album changed my life, it made being 15 so much more fun. This album is so quirky, cerebral, eccentric and very tuneful. Played it to death. [First added to this chart: 08/27/2017]

This amazing album from 1991 changed my life, as well as a lot of other people's lives. I had the Teen Spirit single on vinyl and I played it to death. I remember a group of indie lads used to go around our teenage parties and put on a cassette copy of Sliver on and all of us would go nuts. Even though that song wasn't on the album. It was incredible to hear this passionate and rebellious music as a 16-year old with my whole life ahead of me. Kurt Cobain and the lads were incredible. One of the very best records of the 90s, by far. One of the best records, period. A game changer. [First added to this chart: 08/06/2016]

Cracking album from the Icelandic superstar. I like this one a lot. It has some monster tracks and more importantly you can dance to a lot of them. She has many good albums but this one is the most memorable for me. [First added to this chart: 10/18/2016]

Seminal rap record. know and like quite a few. This is my favourite of the genre, closely followed by albums by Kendrick Lamar, Jay-Z and MF Doom. I even like a bit of Eminem. I love this album. It's hip, it's funny, serious at times, it's fresh and despite having a fine vintage by now it still sounds modern and relevant. On a similar vein I love Liquid Swords by the Clan's GZA too. And I adore kung-fu movies especially cult ones from the 70s. And I liked them even before I knew they were a favourite of Quentin Tarantino too. If you haven't heard this album give it a go. You will soon be grinning and nodding your head [First added to this chart: 02/26/2017]

This was one of the big albums of my generation. I liked Definitely Maybe when it debuted in '94 but Morning Glory was just terrific. I was in my first year of University and it was played all over campus along with Blur, Pulp and also Alanis Morrisette and Sheryl Crow. Oasis captured the zeitgeist of the time with this album. It was exciting. Plus it propelled indie music - what was to become Britpop - into the mainstream. A great time to be young and alive. [First added to this chart: 10/18/2016]

Reminds me of the 90s and being younger. Very spiritual and satisfying album. The only one of hers I really like all the way through. It is a real barnstormer of an album. Great singing, warmth, joy, big songs, great backing singers. Slick production. Don't know why I didn't include it earlier. Hugely talented performer. [First added to this chart: 12/13/2021]

He has many good albums, Faith is hard to beat but I find its overall tone a bit dark and he tries too hard to be all serious. Didn't harm its massive sales though. But I find Listen Without Prejudice to be my favourite George Michael album. It is a very soulful and spiritual album. It has so many great moments. Praying For Time is a great opener, the album flows well. My two favourite tracks are Cowboys And Angels and the Stevie Wonder cover They Won't Go When I Go. He put a lot of passion into his music and it shows. And this is an excellent album. [First added to this chart: 07/22/2018]

An album which I discovered in the late 2000's. For some reason this band and this album passed me by in the 90's, which is unusual, as I often had my nose buried in a music magazine. Anyway I love Fade Into You, I think it's one of the best songs of the 90's. Hope Sandoval has a bewitching voice. So talented. And the whole album is very atmospheric and listenable. And great played late at night. It's become one of my very favourite albums. I adore it. [First added to this chart: 04/26/2020]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 1% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 92.9/100, a mean average of 93.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 93.5/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 7.7.

There is so much to like about this chart. The intro is spot on - how music is a connection to something greater in one's life (& that's why certain albums, often dismissed by the masses, can find a home in someone's greatest 100 chart). Your chart speaks honestly (no peer pressure) and it is the kind of chart I like to spend time with and will read from no.1 to no.100. Definitely one of my favourite charts on this site. Nicely put together CB - could very well be my first 100!
