Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 81.0/100, a mean average of 78.8/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 77.5/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 8.8.

I am hard core fan of the The National, believe me, I've seen them live 4 times, 4 different countries, I just follow them around. The only thing I dont agree with the selection of the albums is putting The Virginia EP on top of Alligator or even Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers. It has some great tunes, but at the end is not a complete album.

As of the rest of the chart, it`s a great chart, great start for you. I think you'll love the 90's, blur, Neutral Milk Hotel, Nirvana, some REM stuff or even Oasis had some great stuff in that decade. Get into that, then you can move deeper into the decades.

not a bad list. i love the national, but alligator is my favourite by far. As far as pre-2000 stuff, i wouldn't worry about it too much. Sure there lots of awesome stuff from back then, but there's just as much awesome stuff now.

I used to listen to nothing pre 90's (thats when I got into music, being in my teens during the 90's) but this website changed that. Based on your chart, I dont really know what to suggest. Maybe The Cure - Disintegration, Pixies - Doolitle. Also Depeche mode - Violator ..maybe (the 80's music was the hardest for me to get into.) I listened to alt. rock so it was easy to get into The Beatles, led zep, Rolling Stones, Velvet Underground etc.

Great chart btw, if it was a 2000's chart. Love The national and Arcade Fire. And In Rainbows one of my favorite albums of all time.

Nice enough chart but you do need to listen to pre:2000 stuff but I understand why this is the case.

I understand, I used to be like that too. Just take a look at some of the better charts on this site. I'd recommend Pixies - Debaser, The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds and Talking Heads - Remain In Light as a start.

Your top 10 is great, the chart is a little too modern though. Do you listen to anything pre-00's?
