When these two get together, only good things can happen. New Zealand brothers Tim Finn (Split Enz) and Neil Finn (Crowded House) combine for their 3rd collaboration. The first was on the classic Crowded House album Woodface. Here, the harmonies are exceptional, and the songs of excellent quality. "Won't Give In", "Nothing Wrong With You", and "Edible Flowers" are the standouts, but this is a great album altogether. As usual for the Finns. A great listen and a must if you love great harmonies.

Neil continues with Crowded House. There still has not been a follow up to Everyone Is Here...but hopefully soon. These guys just can't lose.

Neil Finn was a member of Split Enz, and was the driving force of Crowded House…a giant of the music of New Zealand. Following up his solo debut album, Try Whistling This, Finn released One Nil in 2001. Over a year later, the album was released in the United States as One All, with a different track listing and four of the tracks in remixed versions. Unlike Try Whistling This, One All is a very safe album, taking very few chances which makes it ultimately less memorable. Although the album did reach number one in Finn’s home country, it was less successful elsewhere in the world, including the US, where it had been hoped that the remixed tracks would garner more attention. As is the norm for a Finn project, the songwriting is excellent, and it’s musically sound. But ultimately, One All never rises above being just a pretty good album.

The best songs here, “Rest Of The Day Off”, “Hole In The Ice”, “Wherever You Are” and “Last To Know”, are good enough to keep things interesting, but rank below Finn’s best work. The album does have a slew of fine guest players, including Wendy And Lisa, Lisa Germano, Sheryl Crow and Mitchell Froom. But despite this, One All just never quite takes off the way Finn’s albums with Crowded House or Split Enz do. His next solo album was not released until 2014 (Dizzy Heights), but Finn stayed busy in the meantime with Crowded House, 7 Worlds Collide and Pajama Club. One Nil is not his greatest work, but if you’re a fan, it’s still well worth hearing. Finn is, even on an album that is less that amazing, a fine and very melodic songwriter, a writer of smart and catchy jangly pop rock that is never a drag. There is really no bad Neil Finn album.

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 84.0/100, a mean average of 81.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 83.5/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 18.3.

When I think of the 2000s, I think of punk, post-grunge, and alternative rock. That's almost nonexistent here, or at least ones that I like. I hate country, so we clearly have very different tastes but I don't care. There are some good ones like Green Day, The Killers, Weezer, Modest Mouse, Gorillaz etc., but that's few and far between. Overall, pretty boring and flat.

I couldn't agree more with your decision to list Cold Roses at #1, as it's definitely the album from the 2000s that has meant the most to me. Just a fantastic rock album, bringing together elements that remind me of much of the rock that I loved in the seventies: Grateful Dead and the Rolling Stones especially. I also love Funeral (I know everyone does, but it's for good reason), The Dirty South, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, and many others from your list. Tons of great Americana here--a fantastic list.

Great chart, love the alt-country feel. Ryan Adams' catalogue is very underrated so good to see the representation here.

I haven't listened to many of the albums so I can't judge completely. However your comments are great, you are a Jayhawks fan like me (I wish we lived in that world where everyone loved RDM), you include other artists and bands I like like Wilco (Being There is great), Muse (you must include OOS!) or The Shins and I see no album I dislike so congrats for the chart.

Man this chart is awesome. 23 albums in common with mine, but i love more than half of the albums on this chart. Never could quite get in to Gomez, maybe hes due for an other listen. Also, havent listened to most of the later stuff by older artists. Anyway, great list!
