Gomez is a British band that has been around since the late 90’s. Have you never heard of them? Shame. Gomez is kind of like what Journey was to the late 1970’s and early 80’s…the girls really dig Gomez, as they did Journey. And the guys listened to Gomez because they wanted the girls. The difference between Gomez and Journey is that Gomez is a hell of a lot more entertaining and a much better band. They have never made much of an impression (beyond the female audience) in America, which is too bad…Gomez makes terrific music. And they have a very impressive lineup of great songs. And albums. In Our Gun is the third record by Gomez, and while it failed to even dent the US charts, it was a top ten UK album. And for good reason.

Gomez has been fully intact since 1996, with three strong songwriters in Olly Peacock, Ian Ball and Ben Ottewell. In Our Gun features fine writing with “Shot Shot”, “Ping One Down”, “Detroit Swing 66” and “Sound Of Sounds”. Ball and Ottewell have contrasting vocal sounds, which gives each song a welcome variance. In Our Gun gets overlooked as it sits between Liquid Skin and Split The Difference, but it still stands as one of the better Gomez albums. Don’t know who Gomez is? Go take a listen. This is a fine, and very (in the US) underrated band. Tuneful, rocking, interesting, and highly entertaining. The men don’t know…but the girls…they always understand. Gomez is the real deal, and are a worthy discovery.

Produced by Jim Abbiss. This is supposed to be the kind of album I don't like. But I was hooked from the first listen to "Red Light Indicates Doors Are Secured". The pace of this album is furious, and the energy is endless. The album is almost flawless...its flaws make it even better. In 2006, I thought music was dying. This album changed my mind about that. This album makes me want to celebrate whatever I'm doing, which, to me, is the mark of a truly successful recording. [First added to this chart: 10/31/2012]

Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood go way back. After the breakup of Cream in 1968, coinciding with Winwood’s departure from The Spencer Davis Group, the two joined forces to form the first really major supergroup in Blind Faith. It didn’t last long, as the Blind Faith tour ended up being loaded with Cream songs because the band didn’t have a lot of material to draw from, forcing Clapton to leave for solo (and Delaney & Bonnie) pastures. But the Blind Faith album did show us one thing…Clapton and Winwood work very well together. This show, recorded in 2008, is the first full show featuring the two together in almost 40 years, and it features some really great moments. Surprisingly, only 9 of the album’s 21 tracks are original: 7 from Winwood and only two from Clapton (JJ Cale out wrote Clapton here, 3 to 2). But there are songs from the entire spectrum of both men’s careers, with the exception of Cream and The Spencer Davis Group.

Blind Faith songs are, of course, prominent, but there’s also material from Traffic, Derek & The Dominos, and the solo careers of both. Lots of blues, and even a two song tribute to Jimi Hendrix. “Rambling On My Mind” is Clapton by himself, while “Georgia On My Mind” features just Winwood. The biggest highlights are the Blind Faith numbers “Can’t Find My Way Home” and “Presence Of The Lord”, one of Clapton’s best songs. The only real issue is that between the two, the overall song list could have been much better. Also, you’ll be much better served to have the companion DVD (mine does not). Having some of their better known material (for instance, “Layla” and “Back In The High Life”) would make this set, at over two hours long, much easier to deal with in a single setting. Songs like (both by Cale) “After Midnight” and “Cocaine” (the encore?) are much too common fare from Clapton, who has a large selection of better material to choose from. If you’re a fan of both, this will do nicely, and the playing is exceptional. Just better material and about 20 minutes off the top would make it so much better.

Produced by Rich Costey and Muse. Album number four from Muse is yet another monster effort from this little band with the huge sound. With the huge "Knights Of Cydonia" as the payoff at the end, Matthew Bellamy's songwriting is as good as ever, with "Supermassive Black Hole" and "Starlight" being other standout tracks. Sometimes dismissed as overblown, Black Holes And Revelations is big, loud, and massive in scope...but I don't think there's anything overblown about it. Impressive? Yes. 2006 – FALLOUT
Produced By TONY HOFFER

1. Henrietta
2. Flathead
3. Whistle For The Choir
4. Chelsea Dagger
5. The Gutterati?
6. For The Girl
7. Doginabag
8. Creepin’ Up The Backstairs
9. Vince The Loveable Stoner
10. Everybody Knows You Cried Last Night
11. Baby Fratelli
12. Got Ma Nuts From A Hippy

If you are looking for energy…this album is for you. The Fratellis (named after the crime family in The Goonies!) roared out of Scotland with a youthful exuberance that outshined the rest of the Brit Pop bands of the time, and an ability to be oh so rock and roll. Their debut album, Costello Music, was all over their native British charts in 2006 and 2007…and almost nowhere else. It made no dents in the American charts, and that’s too bad. Costello Music is a pure burst of energy, and spawned an impressive six UK hits. This is an album from the mid 2000’s that lovers of classic rock ignored while crying that rock was dead…The Fratellis prove otherwise. This is a set of songs designed to do one thing…rock you. And it does, most effectively.

The star of this show is “Chelsea Dagger”, one of the most gleefully jumping rock songs of the last many, many years. Then imagine an album built around it, and there you go. “Henrietta”, “Baby Fratelli”, “Flathead” and “Whistle For The Choir”, along with the hidden track “Ole Black ‘N’ Blue Eyes”, make this a more than worthwhile journey. The Fratellis rock is smart, loaded with loud guitars, and it’s as British as can be. Don’t let that put you off…the UK rockers have always gotten a piece of the puzzle that we Americans seem to always miss…it’s okay to keep the music of your parents alive. This band does that. With guitars and drums and some of the catchiest hooks you’ll find. This band hasn’t done too much since…but you really should hear this high energy debut.

2002 – CAPITOL
Produced By COLDPLAY & KEN NELSON

1. Politik
2. In My Place
3. God Put A Smile Upon Your Face
4. The Scientist
5. Clocks
6. Daylight
7. Green Eyes
8. Warning Sign
9. A Whisper
10. A Rush Of Blood To The Head
11. Amsterdam

Coldplay gets a lot of heat these days. I’m not getting why, but people turned on them at some point. But in 2002, with their second album (A Rush Of Blood To The Head), this band emerged from that band that did that “Yellow” song to the most likely heir apparent to the throne of Radiohead. And for good reason…this is one powerhouse of an album. You hear not only the lineage of Radiohead, but also the strong influence of bands like R.E.M. and U2. Led by frontman / pianist Chris Martin, Coldplay exploded with an album that was below…but not by a whole lot…the level of OK Computer. Loaded with great hits and layers of great sounding music, this was a band that was truly on the rise.

The best tracks here (“The Scientist”, “God Put A Smile Upon Your Face”, “In My Place”) are as good as anything that came out in the early 2000’s. And “Clocks” is a pure winner. Whatever sins Coldplay
may or may not have committed against the world of music, the truth is, this is one of the best albums of the decade. There is no sophomore slump with this band…they, like Radiohead, got better the second time around. And the third as well…in fact, every single Coldplay album from this one forward has peaked in the top five in both the UK and America…no small feat. This is the album where the band got it together, and it’s a true winner from start to finish. Definitely one to at least give a listen to.

2006-ATO
Produced By GOMEZ & GIL NORTON

1. Notice
2. See The World
3. How We Operate
4. Hamoa Beach
5. Girlshapedlovedrug
6. Chasing Ghosts With Alcohol
7. Tear Your Love Apart
8. Charley Patton Songs
9. Woman! Man!
10. All Too Much
11. Cry On Demand
12. Don’t Make Me Laugh

The 5th album from Gomez should have made them huge in America…but it didn’t happen. Loaded with great songs and great sounds, How We Operate is stacked with should have been hits. In particular, “Girlshapedlovedrug”, “See The World”, “Woman! Man!”…all excellent. And The title track is as solid as anything the band has ever done.

Despite the successful use of tracks on TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy and House, the album never caught on here, although it is the band’s most successful album in the US. This is one you should definitely check out…Gomez is a very underappreciated band in the states, and deserves a bigger audience. And How We Operate is simply a great album.

Produced by Paul Epworth and Bloc Party. You can't please all of the people all of the time, but Bloc Party certainly did try with their debut album. Silent Alarm crosses genres so many times, it's hard to keep track. The result is a fascinating and well rounded album that sounds better and better with each subsequent listening. So much to like about this..."So Here We Are", "Positive Tension", "Pioneers", "Banquet". A great collection of ambitious and well crafted songs. This deserves every bit of praise that it gets. Produced by Rich Costey, John Cornfield, Muse and Paul Reeve. Maybe the biggest sounding three piece band ever. Absolution is one of three must have albums by this band, along with Black Holes and Origin Of Symmetry. Matthew Bellamy is a musical giant, and Absolution is blessed with strong tracks like "Stockholm Syndrome" and "Time Is Running Out", and the rest is above solid as well. Muse is one of those bands you simply can't ignore, and this album should be a part of your Muse experience. [First added to this chart: 01/05/2012]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 84.0/100, a mean average of 81.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 83.5/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 18.3.

When I think of the 2000s, I think of punk, post-grunge, and alternative rock. That's almost nonexistent here, or at least ones that I like. I hate country, so we clearly have very different tastes but I don't care. There are some good ones like Green Day, The Killers, Weezer, Modest Mouse, Gorillaz etc., but that's few and far between. Overall, pretty boring and flat.

I couldn't agree more with your decision to list Cold Roses at #1, as it's definitely the album from the 2000s that has meant the most to me. Just a fantastic rock album, bringing together elements that remind me of much of the rock that I loved in the seventies: Grateful Dead and the Rolling Stones especially. I also love Funeral (I know everyone does, but it's for good reason), The Dirty South, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, and many others from your list. Tons of great Americana here--a fantastic list.

I haven't listened to many of the albums so I can't judge completely. However your comments are great, you are a Jayhawks fan like me (I wish we lived in that world where everyone loved RDM), you include other artists and bands I like like Wilco (Being There is great), Muse (you must include OOS!) or The Shins and I see no album I dislike so congrats for the chart.
