Produced by Jason Isbell & Patterson Hood. Drive-By Truckers were just a stepping stone for Jason Isbell, and everyone pretty much knew it. You can't keep a songwriter as prolific and as good as Isbell to 3 songs per album for long. Sirens is his solo debut, and it's bursting with an "I'm free" attitude. Isbell is all about great songs, and this album is loaded with them. If country music used Jason Isbell as its career model instead of trucks and beer and basic redneckery, we'd all be living in a better place...and we'd all like country music a lot more.

For the most part, I'm not a big fan of "lost" tracks. But it's different when an artist like Neil Young makes live recordings from his private archives public. Live At Massey Hall was recorded during Young's Journey Through The Past Solo Tour in 1971 at Massey Hall in Toronto. The album features only Young on guitar and piano, and is an amazingly well played set. Young has said that this should have been the record that came out between After The Gold Rush and Harvest, but he opted for a studio release.
Many of the songs here had yet to see record yet (all of the Harvest tracks, plus some others that surfaced on later albums). "Bad Fog Of Loneliness" is heard on record for the first time here, and "Dance Dance Dance" turned out to be an early version of "Love Is A Rose". In all, Massey Hall is a great record, well with the 34 year wait.

Ryan Bingham may be a young man, but his voice and his songwriting suggest that he’s been down some of the same roads as Tom Waits. After having made a name for himself in Texas for years with his band The Dead Horses, Bingham was signed to Lost Highway records, who surprisingly paired him up with producer Marc Ford, best known as the one time lead guitarist for The Black Crowes. His first major label album, Mescalito, shows Bingham as an already seasoned veteran, and it’s a winner. Although his vocal style may be limiting at times, Bingham makes the most of what he has, and conveys all of the emotion necessary for great Americana / alt-country storytelling. But what Bingham has the most of are songs. Mescalito is filled to the brim with fine tales, given extra drama by Bingham’s own voice and some fine playing, led by none other than Ford himself, who adds a lot to the album.
The opener, “Southside Of Heaven”, is a rolling country slice of perfection about life on the road, and still stands as one of Bingham’s finest moments. Other highlights include “Don’t Wait For Me”, “Bread And Water” (Ford plays a scorching slide riff on this one), and the rollicking “Ghost Of Travelin’ Jones”, but nearly every track is a refreshing slice of Americana. Bingham sometimes brings to mind Steve Earle or Bruce Springsteen, or a combination of both, which is no small feat. Mescalito has moments of country beauty (“the outro of “Southside Of Heaven” is all mandolins and banjo and back porch joy), moments where it rocks just enough (“The Other Side”), and even a bit of mariachi (“Boracho Station”) In all, Mescalito is the perfect place to start a country journey that avoids the pop disasters of current Nashville music. No production credit. "The Picture" shows that Jay Farrar can be upbeat if he wants to be. The Search has Farrar re-inventing his band once again, with really exceptional results. The simplicity of "Slow Hearse", the classic Son Volt theme of the excellent "Methamphetamine", fine front to back songwriting, the perfection of the band as a whole. Son Volt's albums are all pretty much great, but this one came out at a time that made it particularly special to me. This one by a nose over them all except for Trace.

Produced by Adam Kasper and Eddie Vedder. In 2007, Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder had still not made a solo album. That changed when Sean Penn handpicked Vedder to write and perform music for his film Into The Wild. The stripped down songs are played almost exclusively by Vedder, and are based on scenes from the movie. It's really a beautiful album, and makes you wonder why he waited so damn long to make an album of his own. I guess it's because Vedder has always been a team player.

Produced by James Mercer and Joe Chiccarelli. Another fine album by The Shins. Wincing The Night Away is the bands third album, coming after Oh, Inverted World and Chutes Too Narrow to form an impressive trilogy of albums that doesn't happen very often. The excellence of The Shins is apparent all the way through this album,which is just consistently good. Every song is a highlight, and the album as a whole is thoroughly satisfying. The Shins, for this reason, is one of my all time favorite bands.

When I think of the 2000s, I think of punk, post-grunge, and alternative rock. That's almost nonexistent here, or at least ones that I like. I hate country, so we clearly have very different tastes but I don't care. There are some good ones like Green Day, The Killers, Weezer, Modest Mouse, Gorillaz etc., but that's few and far between. Overall, pretty boring and flat.

I couldn't agree more with your decision to list Cold Roses at #1, as it's definitely the album from the 2000s that has meant the most to me. Just a fantastic rock album, bringing together elements that remind me of much of the rock that I loved in the seventies: Grateful Dead and the Rolling Stones especially. I also love Funeral (I know everyone does, but it's for good reason), The Dirty South, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, and many others from your list. Tons of great Americana here--a fantastic list.

Great chart, love the alt-country feel. Ryan Adams' catalogue is very underrated so good to see the representation here.

I haven't listened to many of the albums so I can't judge completely. However your comments are great, you are a Jayhawks fan like me (I wish we lived in that world where everyone loved RDM), you include other artists and bands I like like Wilco (Being There is great), Muse (you must include OOS!) or The Shins and I see no album I dislike so congrats for the chart.

Man this chart is awesome. 23 albums in common with mine, but i love more than half of the albums on this chart. Never could quite get in to Gomez, maybe hes due for an other listen. Also, havent listened to most of the later stuff by older artists. Anyway, great list!
