Recently Departed: 2024
by Moondance
It's 2024 & I continue my series of 'Recently Departed' charts.
These charts give me a final opportunity to recognise & thank those singers, musicians and bands that have graced my life over the past 60+ years.
Those artists that I regard most highly will fill the top spots of the chart; thereafter, the chart will be ordered chronologically based on the date of the artist's passing.
Unlike the previous 2 charts in this series (2022/2023 - the Covid years), I am grateful that I have not had to take advantage of the full 100 places available in BEA charts.

John has been making his mark for the past 60 years - with the Bluebreakers & as a solo artist. His discography lists 35 studio albums & 34 live albums released between 1965 - 2022. Eric Clapton, John McVie, Peter Green, Mick Taylor were members of his various early band iterations.
In 2024, John was finally inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.
I have John's 'Empty Rooms' album listed in my top 100 albums of all time. Released in 1970 it seemed to have resonated within Australia more than anywhere else in the world - reaching no.6 on the charts. The song 'Plan Your Revolution' was a calling cry for me & my high school friends - especially as we began to question the ingrained societal norms of the day. For some reason, I took a deeper interest in the album & discovered a beauty in songs like: Don't Pick A Flower; Thinking Of My Woman; Waiting For The Right Time; Counting The Days. It was an album I found myself returning to over the years and it has become a comfort to have it near.
So, the loss of John has hit me hard - especially following the loss of Jon Mark (guitarist & co-writer of several Empty Rooms songs) in 2021. [First added to this chart: 07/27/2024]
b: 27 February 1951/d: 17 March 2024 - age 73
Steve's career spanned 1973 - 2020 & produced 6 albums with Cockney Rebel and 6 solo albums.
His 1975 album with Cockney Rebel - The Best Years Of Our Lives - is listed in my top 100 Greatest Albums of All Time chart.
His is a sad loss to me. [First added to this chart: 04/05/2024]
b: 27 December 1941/d: 24 April 2024 - age 82
Founding member of The Moody Blues and the last of the original five to pass. [First added to this chart: 06/05/2024]
Melanie made a big impact internationally in the early 70's. Her 'Candles In The Rain' album reached no.2 in the Australian charts (& top 10 elsewhere) and I had a well worn copy of the LP. For that period of time in modern music and in my own discovery of modern music, she will always hold a special place for me.
Melanie released almost 30 albums between 1968 to 2010, but she never re-captured the 'magic' of her '68 - '72 period. [First added to this chart: 02/04/2024]
Apart from being an original member of Blue Mink (1969-74) & Sky (1978-95) as well as a member of T-Rex (76-77), Herbie is renowned as the creator of several iconic basslines - Walk On The Wild Side (Lou Reed), Rock On (David Essex), Jump Into The Fire Harry Nilsson). Herbie also contributed bass on several iconic songs/album: Space Oddity & Diamond Dogs (David Bowie); Candles In The Rain (Melanie); Jeff Wayne's Musical version of War Of The Worlds. [First added to this chart: 09/23/2024]
Joe was one of the founding members of Stealers Wheel & co-wrote their hit song 'Stuck In The Middle With You' with Gerry Rafferty. This is one of my favourite songs from 1973.
Stealers Wheel released 3 studio albums between 1972 - 75.
Joe then went on to a brief solo careers, releasing 2 albums between 1979 - 81/ [First added to this chart: 07/24/2024]
Happy was a stalwart of the early 60's Greenwich Village scene. In early 1963, as a member of the 'New World Singers', he was involved in the first recorded version of Dylan's 'Blowin' In The Wind'.
Happy released a dozen solo recording and was involved in a heap of collaborative albums over his career, which stretched from the early 60's to to mid 2010's.
As a side note, Dylan invited Happy to re-record several songs from Dylan's Woodstock hiatus (1966-67) for inclusion in Dylan's 1971 'Greatest Hits Vol.II' compilation albums. [First added to this chart: 07/30/2024]
b: 22 November 1946/d: 3 February 2024 - age 77
Aston is best known as the bassist and bandleader of Bob Marley's backing band, as well as co-producer of the albums, and the man in charge of the overall song arrangements.
Aston involvement with Bob Marley stretches from 1970 (Soul Rebels) to 1983 (Confrontation) and key songs during that period include: Stir It Up; Get Up Stand Up; I Shot The Sheriff; No Woman No Cry; One Love/People Get Ready; Is This Love. [First added to this chart: 02/11/2024]
David is probably best known for playing the role of 'Hutch' in the mid-late 70's US TV series 'Starsky & Hutch'.
In 1976, he had an international hit song - 'Don't Give Up On Us' - it reached no.1 in my homeland of Australia - so I became aware of his musical career as well as his acting career.
The album chosen above includes this hit song - which didn't feature on the 'David Soul' album released later in the year. [First added to this chart: 01/20/2024]
b: 16 January 1950/d: 9 February 2024 - age 74
Kenji was lead vocalist for Can between 1970 - 1973: a period to resulted in the release of three influential albums - Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi & Future Days. [First added to this chart: 03/16/2024]
