Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by C0NB9NN

I’m the guy who hates Led Zeppelin. I’m indecisive about my top Beatles pick. I’m 19, and never been to a rock concert.

The first album I ever really listened to, sitting down and going through it all. I had obviously known the hits, but hearing I Want You and the B-Side medley for the first time? That was truly magical. For it’s time, while not the most groundbreaking, I think it had the best production of an album ever, probably up until DSOTM (see 39).

The following summer while on vacation I stopped at an overpriced record store and bought a copy for like $30. I played it every day for almost 2 months straight when I got back, me and siblings just repeat after repeat, this one and Queen’s The Game.

I think the reason it only got to 11 is because it’s such a safe pick. You don’t add flavor by putting in Abbey Road. But you get safety and security. And that sometimes is worth the risk of taking that safe option. It’s the safe option to end all safe options. It’s THAT good. It’s THAT respected.

I mean come on. It’s The Beatles

The explosion that stated the summer of '67. Everything the Beatles did can be summed up in this album. Explosive, bending, elusive. Magic.

I really think that’s the best way to describe this album. Explosive. Gives a simple count out and then BAM that riff to taxman hits and you know this album is just not going to let up. The band had been compressed by album after album, tour and televised event after the other. The albums before this had been recorded so fast that compared to this masterpiece, they were rushed. But when they finally had a chance to stop and really put something together, the pressure is released and it’s a sonic reinvention. Dylan had already laid the groundwork to show that rock and roll could be something more than the dance floor, and it was ‘66 when it really entered the studio. Brian Wilson was able to show the beauty that rock could become (see Pet Sounds, 3) and then it was up to the Beatles to show how it could change in a different way. Hard, metallic. Cold, but not in a bitter way. More in a machine way.

Revolver may be the explosion as a relief of pressure, but The White Album is an explosion because of pressure.

Revolver is akin to putting shaving cream in an air vacuum and turning it on. (Sgt. Pepper is letting the air back in and watching it all disappear). The White Album is strapping C4 to a shook up 2 liter bottle of Dr. Pepper and hoping you can get away in time, telling yourself its best to look from afar but knowing you can't escape the sprawl. Everything, and I mean everything is covered on this album. Chamber music, stage numbers, proto metal, lullabies, acoustic longings, social commentaries, Beach Boys/Chuck Berry parodies, and whatever the hell Rev 9 is. You find yourself looking at the rubble and still finding it tastefull, like the climax of a mushroom cloud before God rains down upon you. Accidental masterpiece? Sure, but Bob Ross knows that the best way to describe the album was to not give it a cover.

The White Album: 4 Dudes outselling each other.

Best Tracks: While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Julia, Helter Skelter, Blackbird, Yer Blues, Revolution 1, Rocky Racoon, Happiness Is A Warm Gun, Dear Prudence, Glass Onion, The Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill, Back In The U.S.S.R., Why Don’t We Do It In The Road, Sexy Sadie

Have to agree with larex13. You’re musical tastes are way more developed than mine were at your age. This is a great chart.

Keep discovering and learning. It’s a great journey

For someone relatively new to music, you know more than I ever did at 18. If I can offer any advice, vary the genres you listen to without prejudice, and look into music outside of the US/UK. Also, certain albums may take a few listens at the right time to hit home. Enjoy your discovery.

Cheers.
