Top 100 Greatest Music Albums
by samistake2ice

ANNOUNCEMENT: I'm currently starting with my year charts working through my decades and finishing with an updated version of my overall. Probably sometime in November, when my 2015 chart is a little more solid, will I be done with this chart. Thank you.

This is my "100 Favorite Albums List"

I think it's pretty hard to definitively rank your favorite albums so lets just say each one of these albums is accurate give or take 5 spots.

I grew up in the 90s, but was raised on a lot of 60s and 70s blues rock. I love Americana/Country/Folk having grown up in Texas, but I think my tastes are pretty broad. If there are albums on my list that you've never heard of (& there are) I recommend having a listen.

Enjoy

I just love Bob Dylan, that's about it. I'm inexplicably drawn to this album, more than the rest, however. The narratives in the songs and even the cover art just pique my interest.

It's possible in this last update Transformer got a huge bump because of Lou Reed's passing. But, I have been listening to this album almost non stop since his death and I hear something new, or gain a different appreciation of a song, every time. RIP Lou Reed, you will be missed.

Waits well before the cigs and whiskey took complete hold of his vocal chords. I feel like maybe because of that, there is an innocence to this album that seems so basic. It's not complex its just real.

The quintessential southern folk album; clever, witty, politically aware. Not to mention one of the greatest debuts of all time.

I have developed a completely irrational jealous complex towards those who were in attendance at the The Old Quarter on this night. This is easily the place I would go if I could travel back in time to any show. It's perfect, an intimate setting with beautiful songs, terrible jokes, played to a respectful audience that understands what's happening in front of them. Trust me, rednecks in Houston, don't shut the fuck up! So when Townes finishes a song and says "Wow, I've never heard it that quiet in here", you know the atmosphere must've been something special.

Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 86.5/100, a mean average of 86.9/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 86.7/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 9.5.

There's an incredible collection of talented songwriters in this collection. You could literally use this list for a introductory course in American songwriting. Love this chart!

For whatever reason I just can't get into calexico. Their new album is all I've listened to, and I feel like it's sorta been pushed down my throat. I'll listen to the others today.
