‘Long, Long, Long’ is tasked with following up his track and gives it a good go. The track feels much more dreamlike with the distant vocals and unexpected turns in the instrumentation. ‘Revolution 1’ is a likeable track, with the repeated refrain of “Don’t you know it’s gonna be alright” having a very calming effect. ‘Honey Pie’ sounds nothing like earlier track ‘Wild Honey Pie’ and is worse off for it. There’s nothing really wrong with the track but like too many others on the white album it doesn’t do anything all that interesting. ‘Savoy Truffle’ mainly has the same problem, but ‘Cry Baby Cry’ has a much more intimate feel, and yet again building instrumentation is used to brilliant effect.
‘Revolution 9’ has to be the weirdest track to ever appear on an album this commercially successful. It’s also unbelievably good. Every part of the collage of sounds fits absolutely perfectly to give a complete feeling of nightmarish chaos. It has some of the most effective mixing I’ve ever heard, with different parts getting louder and quieter, or appearing/ disappearing from nowhere, it’s incredibly disorientating. The differing sounds heard at once clash in such a way as to almost always create a feeling of unease, be it with church choirs singing whilst a voice is shouting or when a casual conversation is invaded by a burst of revered instrumentation. Who could have known that the fab four would release one of the scariest songs in all of music? ‘Good Night’ feels like an afterthought by comparison but does a good job of closing out the album. The only way to end a project like this is with a track resembling a sweeping score of a classic Hollywood movie.
The White Album isn’t cohesive, it has long periods where nothing incredibly interesting happens, and some moments are downright awful. But to counter this there is almost no album that can boast of the range and quality of the high points of this album. Though there may be a way to edit it into a record consistent in quality and atmosphere, the massive sprawling expanse of music that this album is gives the fullest picture of the artists, and as a document of who the Beatles were, it is absolutely essential.
(My preferred tracklist for repeated listen would be: Back in the USSR - Dear Prudence - Glass Onion - While My Guitar… - Happiness is a… - I’m So Tired – Blackbird - Rocky Raccoon - Why Don’t We Do it… - Julia - Yer Blues - Helter Skelter - Revolution 1 - Revolution 9 - Good Night)
Best Track: Revolution 9 [First added to this chart: 03/29/2017]
