LCD Soundsystem is the electronic equivalent to Talking Heads. You can tell that James Murphy takes a lot of influence from Talking Heads. What separates them is the electronic instrumentation and the emotional lyrics. James Murphy's lyrics and vocals are what really make this album, and This Is Happening. Of course the silvery production adds to it as well.

"Sickness finds a way"

I'm not usually one for lengthy piano pieces with gentle vocals and minimal instrumentation. Even if a piano ballad is highly regarded on album, i.e. "Bridge Over Troubled Water", I usually steer away from it. However, what I am a sucker for is religious imagery. I'm an agnostic, but my favorite pieces of art and media are ones that invoke biblical/religious themes, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Evangelion, Swans, Berserk, etc. There is something about the stained glass windows, the towering cathedrals, the sense of something greater than man that gets to me. That is why this album dominated by long piano driven songs is rated so highly on this chart. Lingua Ignota does a fantastic job of reframing the old teachings of Christ that have spanned thousands of years into the modern context. A significant theme of this album is showing the hypocrisy of religion, especially in modern times. Kristin also uses Christianity as a framework to view and cope with her own trauma. And it think this all is brilliant.

One thing that really adds to the narrative of this album is the audio samples. The most poignant are the audio samples of Jimmy Swaggart and the insane woman on CNN. These both serve to show the hypocrisy and even pure vitriolic hatred that religious zealots can express, "There is no hate like Christian love". They demonstrate that the moral "goods" that are taught by the Bible can be used to commit acts of selfishness and greed, if you twist the words well enough. The American bastardization of the teachings of Jesus, who often spoke out against greed and selfishness, is used to promote hyper individualization to the point of abject apathy toward the health and well-being of others, most notably during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Of course, the music and vocal performances are fantastic as well. This was my first Lingua Ignota listen and I'm glad it was. It is much more accessible than Caligula, which is also a great album, so I was more open to listening to Caligula. The string swells of "PENNSYLVANIA FURNACE" are probably the highlight of the album for me. The holy poeticism juxtaposed with the virulent, violent screams of "I WHO BEND THE TALL GRASSES" perfectly encapsulates the two-faced love of American Christians. The dirty, disgusting guitars and the hellish and graphic lyrics of "MANY HANDS" are just so perfect. The shimmering mandolin and drones of "PERPETUAL FLAME OF CENTRALIA" hit so hard. And, as a Pennsylvania native, I can say that Kristin uses the legend of Centralia perfectly to describe the fires of Hell. I really, really love the final leg of "MAN IS LIKE A SPRING FLOWER". It reminds of a renaissance fair, and the final moments of distortion lead perfectly into the audio sample of the selfish, religious idiot on CNN.

I think Kristin really hit the mark on this album. It is much needed in these almost apocalyptic times. America is a dying empire, and this is the soundtrack in the ears of God Himself.

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 1% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 91.3/100, a mean average of 91.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 92.1/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 8.3.

@leniad

I have heard all of those albums actually lol. Bitches Brew by Miles Davis is just outside of my top 100 and was on here for a little bit. Jazz on its own isn't my favorite, I love it when it's incorporated with other genres, à la progressive rock, post-rock, Hip-Hop
