I remain a little on the fence as to whether or not it's one of the year's best. In its favor I'll say it succeeds utterly in busting down any notion of musical genre, residing somewhere in the ambiguous terrain carved out by the likes of Frank Zappa in the 1970s. At its best Pom Pom is campy, funny, bizarre, and oddly mesmerizing. Then again, it's also obnoxious at times, with a kind of smirking irony that I find generally distasteful. The fact that you're seeing it appear in my 2014 chart is indication that I've tentatively come down on the side of finding it more a valuable contribution than a detraction, but I'll also confess that five years later I'm still chewing on it but not quite able to digest it. A polarizing album that still leaves me unsure which pole I'm drawn to."  [+]  Reply

We want to put everything, people, art, everything that exists, into little categories with certain attributes so that we don’t have to spend all of our time examining each individual thing to observe its unique properties. It’s just easier that way, it’s easier to see something and say “I now know what this thing is” because of how it has been categorized, either by us or someone else. This can be problematic though, especially in the world of music genres. If any one album fits perfectly into the hole of one genre, then chances are, that album is not particularly interesting (though this is not necessarily true). The best albums, the best music, transcends genres, they look genres in the face and directly defy them. The best music is the music that, when your friends ask about it, you say “It’s kind of a mix between….well it’s kind of like….. you know what just listen to it.” That’s what “You’re Dead!” is. There are so many different genres shoved into this 38-minute, 15-second album that it’ll make your head spin. This is one of the most all-over-the-place, neurotic, chaotic albums that I’ve ever heard. It’s really hard to pin it down in words, and that’s the beauty of it. Listening to this album is like being on a roller coaster with a loose lap-bar. The whole album deals with life and death, it feels like this album is about the futility of life, the futility of what you do with your life. It’s an album that absolutely requires, and will take by force, your whole attention, and needs multiple listenings, and even then, you might not even fully grasp what has just happened, as if you just witnessed a man resurrected from the dead, this album will be swirling around in your head and you may even question whether or not it actually happened, but be assured, it happened, and you loved every glorious, frantic second of it."  [+]  Reply

"As most mainstream pop albums, it's fairly inconsistent. There's a lot of filler (How you get the girl, This love, I know places), but the songs that do work are pretty good, I must admit. I think that the run of "Blank space", "Style", "Out of the woods" and "All you had to do was stay" is great...""As most mainstream pop albums, it's fairly inconsistent. There's a lot of filler (How you get the girl, This love, I know places), but the songs that do work are pretty good, I must admit. I think that the run of "Blank space", "Style", "Out of the woods" and "All you had to do was stay" is great, and those four are the best tracks on the album by a mile. The second half, though, is a little lackluster, but then again, I don't think "1989" was ever designed to be more than a collection of singles. Some of them are great, yes, but the album as a whole doesn't hold for too long. It's not incredibly original either, since "Welcome to New York" rips off the piano riff from "Baba O'Riley", "Wildest dreams" seems like a cover of a Lana del Rey song, "Shake it off"'s beat is heavily reminiscent of Pharrell Williams's "Happy", "Clean" sounds a lot like Lorde and "How you get the girl" is so Katy Perry. The worst thing about these influences is that they're blatantly displayed but Taylor doesn't try to do anything unique with them on the aforementioned tracks. On the other hand, the lyrics are not incredibly mature, but they often manage to sound relatable and nuanced enough, and like I said, the tracks that work are really good, especially "Style", which I think it's her best song to date without a doubt. So to sum up, I would say "1989" is an alright diversion with a couple of gems, but it's far from being a memorable album."  [+]  Reply
